Lockheed's Advanced Development Project has set standards for the aerospace industry for half a century. Under its presiding genius, Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, the Skunk Works produced America's first jet fighter, the world's most successful spy plane (U-2), the first three-times-the-speed-of-sound surveillance aircraft and the F-117A stealth fighter. Rich was Johnson's right-hand man and succeeded him as director in 1975, retiring in 1990. In an entertaining style, the authors describe Johnson's tyrannical managerial style, his thorny but productive relationship with the Air Force and the stealth-technology breakthrough that revolutionized military aviation. Writing with freelancer Jonas, Rich also recounts Skunk Works' failures, including experiments with liquid hydrogen as a propellant and spy-drone flights over China's remote nuclear test facilities. He has much to say about the Defense Department bureaucracy and warns, "Everyone in the defense industry knows that bureaucratic regulations, controls, and paperwork are at critical mass... and... in danger of destroying the entire system." Since its inception in 1943, the Skunk Works has been one of the most top-secret military contractors. Now that the Cold War has ended, its story is uncloaked by former chief Rich, now retired. Using a small number of expert employees, the Skunk Works built technologically advanced aircraft that were disavowed by the government and its users, the Air Force and the CIA, for years after the aircraft were operational. The Skunk Works built notable planes such as the P-80 (the first operational jet fighter), U-2 (the high-altitude spy plane), and F-117A (the Stealth fighter). The story of Stealth's development is most interesting not only in the design, building, and testing but also in its origina in a Russian scientist's paper on aeronautics. There are first-person accounts of some of the missions flown by pilots and notes from many government officials. Highly recommended.

Even for those not fascinated with aerospace, the building of these planes is intriguing as he details the secret missions and machinations of the CIA, Operation Desert Storm, and the like. A gem on many levels

This book is a gem on many levels:

1) On the history and development of spy planes: This has been covered by many previous reviews on this book. So, I won't write more here.

2) On creativity: There are a lot of books on creativity. Many of them are trivial. Most are written by people who themselves have not design or deliver noteworthy innovations that are of national or international significance. This book is different. It is written by a person who has contributed innovations at, and even run Skunk Works, which has delivered innovation after innovation that are internationally significant.

How does a smart scientist or engineer determine if an organization is a place of major technical inventions? This book tells you the characteristics of such organizations. How do you organize and run a place that can deliver breakthrough innovations at bargain prices? This book gives you the principles on how to do it correctly.

3) On cold war and patriotism: This book gives you a glimpse into the cold war, and the hair-triggering tension of nuclear war between U.S. and the ex-Soviet Union. Also, it shows the patriotism among the U.S. government officials, top military echelons, pilots, and civilian scientists and engineers. Even more, it shows how Skunk Works' technologies tipped the power towards the U.S.

4) On biographies: This book is a partial and vivid biography of both Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich. Their personal traits, both strengths and flaws, are clearly described.

5) On Navy's major shortcomings: Kelly's fifteenth principle of rather to starve than to deal with the Navy is nothing short of astonishment. The descriptions of the Navy's sticking to Aegis frigate rather than Skunk Works' SWATH ship, and preferring traditional submarines rather than stealth submarines are so, so astounding. Right now, U.S. has the world's greatest naval power. U.S. naval power could have been much, much greater and the cost to the tax payers could have been much, much lower cost if the Navy had adopted stealth technologies from Skunk Works.

6) On the harmful effects of government interferences, wastes and bureaucratic madness: Reading this book and you can understand why we spend so much in defense and get so little in return.

Overall, this book deserves more than 5 stars. It should be read by CEOs and CTOs (Chief Technology Officer) of every major and high tech corporation looking for ways to leapfrog the competitions. It should be read by every Secretary of Defense and officers in high military echelons looking for military technologies to surpass other nations. It should be read by every bright scientists and engineers looking for a place to work where major innovations can be produced. It should be read by every science and engineering professors on how to educate future generations of science and engineering students that can create and innovate.

Awesome aerospace/military history

Skunk works is the true story behind the coolest, high tech, top secret, aerospace engineering division operated by the Lockheed Martin corporation. Forged by legendary U. Michigan alumnus Kelly Johnson, the Skunk Works has created the coolest planes of recent memory, including the SR-71 Blackbird (currently visible on the flight deck of the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier in NYC), the F117A Stealth Fighter, and the U2 spy plane. The F22 Raptor and the Joint Strike Fighter are also creations of the Skunk Works, but are not covered in this autobiography written by the successor to Kelly Johnson, Ben Rich.
This quick read is well worth your while for a couple of reasons. First, the stories behind the creation of these planes is very interesting. For example, the Skunk Works engineers found the mathematical key to the stealth design buried within an obscure physics journal originally published in Russian. Oddly, the Russians military never capitalized on the principle, despite urgings from the article's Russian author. Furthermore, when the stealth plane was first designed and kept in a secret hanger infested with some bats, the bats couldn't detect the plane with their "sonar-like" sense, and they ended up crashing into it.
The book also makes for excellent military and therefore world history. Accomplishments of the U2 spy plane and the F117-A Stealth Fighter are covered in depth and literally changed the course of world events during the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, the Gulf War, and other skirmishes. Many interesting, behind the scenes (formerly classified?) missions are also revealed in this book. Ben Rich also speculates on the future types of planes currently on the minds of engineers at the Skunk Works, and the implications will change how wars are fought in the future.
For readers who liked this book, NOVA recently published a video on the creation of the Joint Strike Fighter, a contract fought over between the Skunk Works and the Phantom Works of Boeing. These do all fighters are amazing, and this video is definately worth watching for those who enjoyed "Skunk Works."

Engrossing true story

I'm not particularly an avid reader of military history books or contemporary history books in general, but after a coworker described this book, curiosity got the better of me and I bought it. I'm glad I did.
Ben R. Rich joined the legendary 'Skunk Works' as a young engineer, worked on some of the most secretive military projects in recent history, and later ended up taking over management of Skunk Works. As a result, perhaps no one else in the world has as much first hand knowledge of these projects, and no one else is better positioned to chronicle some of America's military crown jewels.
Rich (and Janos) have crafted a unique book that gives Ben Rich story, with interesting first hand accounts from pilots, air force personnel, and highly placed government officials. Rich covers the struggles encountered while building various classified aircraft: the U2, SR-71 BlackBird, the stealth fighter, the stealth boat, among others. He also lightly delves into the darker side of the defense industry: politics, waste, and bureaucracy.
An amazing read, and highly recommended.

About the Author
William C. Boynton, Ph.D., CPA received his doctorate in accounting from Michigan State University. He is professor emeritus of accounting at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo where he formerly served as dean and head of the Accounting Department. He has served on the audit staffs of two international public accounting firms. He has also served as a regional chairperson of the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association, and on a variety of committees for the American Accounting Association and the  Federation of Schools of Accountancy. He is the author or coauthor of several articles and committee reports on accounting and auditing, and has served as codirector of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, he has served on its Globalization Task Force and its Committees on Accounting Education, the 150-Hour Requirement, and Accounting Principles and Auditing Standards. He is a recipient of the California Society of Certified public Accountants Faculty Excellence Award.

Raymond N. Johnson, Ph.D., CPA received his doctorate in accounting from the University of Oregon. He is a professor of accounting at Portland State University where he formerly served as head of the Accounting Department, Assistant to the Vice President for Finance and Administration and Assistant to the Provost. He has served on the audit staffs of two international public accounting firms and one local firm. He also served as a consultant to the Auditing Standards Board and was a member of the AICPA Control Risk Audit Guide Task Force. Dr. Johnson currently is a member of the Oregon Board of Accountancy and he is a Past-President of the Oregon Society of CPAs, a former member of AICPA Council (the AICPA's governing body). He led successful legislative and regulatory initiatives in Oregon to expand the pathways to earn the CPA designation. In addition, he has been an American Council on Education Fellow and an Arthur Young McClelland Moores Post-Doctoral Fellow. Dr. Johnson is the recipient of a Leadership Award from the Oregon Entrepreneurs Forum and the Earl Wantland Outstanding Business Professor at Portland State University.

Vague, wordy, confusing, and in need of examples

I found that if you want to learn the language of auditing, have another reference handy. Often, the discourse goes on and on and on and could really be distilled down into a sentence or two that had a firm and grounded presentation. There were very few examples so it was difficult at best to try to understand the often high-level conceptual frameworks that were constantly being presented. I also noted quite a few editing errors that probably arose from cut-and-pastes that were not carefully reviewed. Also, figures and diagrams were reused and were not carefully reviewed either as information was present that didn't apply to the new scenario.

Very Confusing

I believe you can find a better auditing textbook in the market. I took an auditing class with one of the authur in Portland and, as a result, was required to buy the textbook. But, I ended up using another auditing textbook in order to get an "A" from this class. The format and writing style are very difficult to follow and understand.

How and why did Muslims first come to write their own history? The author argues in this work that the Islamic historical tradition arose not out of "idle curiosity," or through imitation of antique models, but as a response to a variety of challenges facing the Islamic community during its first several centuries (ca. seventh to tenth centuries C.E.). The narratives that resulted focused on certain themes of Islamic origins, selected to legitimize particular aspects of the Islamic community and faith in one or another. These included the need to establish the status of Muhammad (d. 632) as prophet, to affirm that the community to which they belonged was the direct descendant of the original community founded by the Prophet, to explain (and justify) Muslim hegemony over vast populations of non-Muslims in the rapidly growing Islamic empire, and to articulate different positions in the ongoing debate with the Islamic community itself over political and religious leadership. An examination of these key themes of early Islamic historiography and the issues generating them is placed in the context of other styles of legitimation in the early Islamic community, including such methods as appeals to piety and genealogy.

An important contribution to the study of how Islam arrived.

A very important study that counters much of the arguments put forth by revisionist historians like Wansborough and Crone. He delves into the nature of the sources, the formation of identity during the earliest phases and ways of understanding the nature of the Movement (Islam). His style is refreshingly clear and consice and his scholarship exhaustive. A must read for any student of Islamic history.

This work is a key contribution in the debate over the historicity and reliability of the early Islamic tradition. Donner's work provides an alternative, redactionary and critical approach to the rise of narrative and historical texts in early Muslim narratives to the `skeptical' approach-associated primarily with the like of P. Crone, M. Cook, and J. Wansborough among others. In the end, he endorses a critical approach to traditional accounts of Islamic origins but one that does not reject its broad outlines. Though this feature distinguishes and orients the argument of the book, it by no means exhausts the book's contents.
The main aim of the work is to address this straightforward question: "Why did Muslims begin to narrate and eventually compose history?" His argument answers this question by examining the evolution of salient narrative themes that predominately arise as result of efforts to procure legitimacy. Hence, the evolution of historical writing is pushed for by the function it serves for establishing the legitimacy of one or another groups' claim to legitimacy. The resulting picture goes far in helping explain some of the odd idiosyncrasies of early Islamic history-e.g., the absence of chronology.
I found the general outlines of the book to be quite convincing; however, the devil is in the details, as it is said. Critical examination of hadith may lead us to confer that it is plausible that the first four caliphs were Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali in that order, that the Battle of the Camel and Siffin occurred, but the details-copiously provided in Islamic tradition-remain highly dubious. In this sense, the ramifications of the book's arguments, even if valid, are not fully drawn and remain open to investigation.

Fred Donner teaches in the department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. He is one of the world's foremost scholars of early Islamic history, and he has published three controversial books on the subject: "The Early Islamic Conquests" (1981), "Narratives of Islamic Origins: The Beginnings of Islamic Historical Writing" (1998), and "Muhammad and the Believers: At the Origins of Islam" (2010).

In "Narratives of Islamic Origins", Donner advances a number of important claims: (1) the Qur'an (in large part, if not in whole) can be confidently dated to the time of Muhammad; (2) while some hadith traditions may derive from the time of Muhammad, many such traditions (including those collected in hadith manuals widely accepted by Sunni Muslims) post-date the time of Muhammad by decades or more; (3) Muhammad and his early followers were largely if not primarily motivated by piety (ethical monotheism), rather than social, economic, or (non-nationalist) political considerations, though such worldly motives may have played some role in the early conquests (see pp. 217-20 of "Muhammad and the Believers: At the Origins of Islam" for an argument that Arab nationalism was a product - not a cause - of the initial expansion of Islam); (4) the earliest Muslims did not sharply distinguish themselves from Jews, Christians, and perhaps even Zoroastrians; (5) Muslims did not develop an historical consciousness until they began to draw hard confessional lines between themselves and other monotheists, a process which was perhaps well underway by 660-80 CE and likely strongly supported (if not largely initiated) by the early Umayyads; (6) Muslims were originally motivated to write history exclusively out of a (more or less conscious) desire to provide legitimation for their faith (i.e., Islam, now viewed as a distinct confession), sect (e.g., proto-Sunni or proto-Shi'a), or tribe; (7) although the tradition of early Islamic historical writing is rife with scribal errors, contradictions, fabrications, and distortions, the tradition is generally reliable when it comes to major events that are widely reported at least from the time of the death of Muhammad, and perhaps even from the time of the hijra, though not before the hijra; (8) and, while admittedly difficult, it is possible in many cases to arrive at confident judgments about even minor events and solitary reports in the early Islamic historical tradition.

All of these claims are controversial. For example, many scholars have rejected the traditional Islamic view that the Qur'an dates to the life of Muhammad, arguing instead that it dates to either the time before Muhammad or long after (or perhaps both, with different parts of the Qur'an dating to different periods). On a related note, many scholars have argued that early Islamic historical writing is either completely fictitious or that it is so riddled with errors that it is impossible for modern scholars to tell fact from fiction. In these and other regards, Donner is fairly conservative in his views of early Islamic history and historiography, though of course traditional Muslims will strongly disagree with a number of his claims, including his claim that Muhammad and the first generation of Muslims did not understand themselves to follow a religion distinct from Judaism and Christianity.

I found many of Donner's claims to be strongly supported by his arguments. In particular, I was persuaded by his case for (1)-(3) and (7)-(8). However, I was not convinced by his case for (4)-(6). I am open to the idea that Muhammad did not view himself as the founder of a new religion, but rather the leader of a monotheistic movement that welcomed Jews and Christians as full members. Still, I am not yet convinced by Donner's arguments for this claim. (I should note that Donner presents a more extensive case for the claim in his recent book Muhammad and the Believers than he does in Narratives of Islamic Origins, but I've read the latter book as well, and I'm still not convinced.) At any rate, I believe that many of Donner's arguments for (1)-(3) and (7)-(8) are still extremely plausible - and in some cases even compelling - despite the fact that his arguments for (4)-(6) are not fully convincing. Moreover, given the importance of (1)-(3) and (7)-(8), I think it is clear that Donner's book is incredibly important even if he is wrong about (4)-(6) - and I do not claim that he is wrong about the latter, only that he has not yet convinced me of them. Also, I want to add that while I am not convinced that Muslims were originally motivated to write history exclusively out of concern for legitimation, I believe that Donner has made a strong case that at least a large portion of early Islamic history was so motivated, and I suspect that Donner could agree to a slightly weaker version of this claim without undermining his other arguments, though perhaps he could not accept a significantly weaker version without such a result.

This is not the place to conduct a thorough evaluation of (6), but I would like to register at least one complaint here. Donner claims on pp. 153-54 that the sira literature was likely motivated in large part as a response to Jewish and Christian doubts about Muhammad's prophetic status, with Umayyad concerns for legitimation also playing a significant role. His claim is certainly plausible, but I don't see why it should be any more likely than the hypothesis that the sira literature was motivated largely, if not entirely, by pietistic considerations. It is instructive here to compare the sira literature with the New Testament. Paul's early letters may have been written within thirty years of the death of Jesus, but it took several more decades for the first gospel (Mark) to appear. Are we to suppose that the gospel accounts were largely motivated by a concern to legitimate Christianity as a confessional movement distinct from Judaism, rather than a pietistic concern to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ? I think not, and I expect that many non-Christian scholars of the New Testament will agree with me here. But then why assume that matters were any different when it comes to the sira literature? Granted, parts of the sira literature may have been motivated by various purposes of legitimation, such as a desire to advance sectarian causes, but I see no reason to attribute such motives to the literature as a whole.

There is one more concern about the book that I would like to voice. Although I am inclined to agree with Donner on (7) and (8), I think that the challenges involved in arriving at confident judgments about many events in early Islamic history may be so severe that the game is not worth the effort. Then again, the challenges involved here may be less severe in many cases than those encountered in reconstructing reliable historical narratives from the Old Testament, but I would be strongly hesitant to say that scholars of the Old Testament should consider giving up on their reconstructions of Old Testament history. And I have similar attitudes about historical Jesus studies. So, perhaps the game is worth the effort. Still, I cannot help having some reservations about the pay-off from scholarly debates about who participated in the Battle of Badr, the outcome of the Battle of Siffin, or the leadership qualities of `Uthman ibn `Affan.

Before closing, I should mention that Donner's book contains a wealth of interesting information, as well as some brilliant analysis, about the sources, themes, motives, social contexts, and historical development of early Islamic historical writing. In short, Donner's book is an invaluable resource for early Islamic history and historiography. No reader will be convinced by everything that Donner says, but I found myself agreeing with him more often than not. Finally, I would like to add that Donner is one of the finest academic writers that I have encountered - that his prose is a pleasure to read, that the book is well organized.

About the Author
Stephen Key is an award-winning inventor, a renowned intellectual property strategist, a successful entrepreneur, and a best-selling author. The more than 20 products he has licensed over the past 35 years have sold in Walmart, 7-Eleven, and Disney stores and theme parks worldwide, as well as been endorsed by Michael Jordan, Alex Trebek, and Taylor Swift.

Along with business partner Andrew Krauss, Stephen co-founded inventRight, a company dedicated to teaching inventors, entrepreneurs, and anyone with an idea how to build wealth through licensing. A must read for amateur inventors and idea people.

Stephen Key knocks it out of the park again for amateur inventors and idea people. This is by far the single best resource to educate yourself on licensing your ideas. Right out of the gate he answers many of the most common questions with a simple yes/no and then goes on to give numerous examples and specific advice. He states many times that you do not need a patent to license your ideas, yet still covers obtaining patents for those with truly big ideas, so the book is very thorough. I'd have preferred he kept those two camps a bit more separate, but other than that the book is chock full of extremely useful information and advice. I used his previous book 'One Simple Idea' to license a game I developed (I have a short ebook about it 'The $5000 Cereal Box Maze'), so his advice really works! This new book is all you'll need if you're already an idea person.

Experienced Inventors Start Their Answers with "It Depends"

Just finished it and already sending copies to inventor friends.
Great information definitely for inventor wannabees, beginners, and intermediate inventors..Definitely belongs in an Inventor Wannabes Library (along with his other two books via Amazon.com) ...
Fastest way to know you are talking to an experienced Inventor is if they start their answer with "It Depends". He does... This book needs/must be read many times with post notes and highlighter in hand .... Great non-fiction books require multiple readings .... He uses multiple personal stories to expand on his lessons.. I need to reread his Federal Court case against LEGO, that he won. His lessons gained there are included in this short 149 pg book, and may help you prepare to protect a big or small idea.
Weakness: He didn't caution readers about the sometimes late night Invention Infomercials. He might have in a prior book. Always needs repeating at every talk on inventing, even though the US Patent Office has good regulations to keep the dishonest ones out.
High Praises: For his insights with working with the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO.gov) and his counsel as to when to write your own Provisional Patent Application (PPA) and when to get it reviewed by a Patent Attorney. He explains how you could submit electronically, your own PPA for under $185 (Filing fees and Drawings) tomorrow and be able seconds later, add "Patent Pending" for a year to your KickStarter Product Campaign.
It will be required reading for members of our local Inventors meetup group, so I don't have to keep talking about the info covered in the book, at every meeting.

Stephen is THE licensing guru.

I've been a product developer for 22 years and have even appeared as a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, back in 2007.
I know enough to know that Stephen's common sense approach is the fastest and smartest way to bring a new product to market. He has become my go-to guru for everything having to do with licensing.
A must read for anyone interested in bringing their ideas to market the fastest and most profitable way possible.

About the Author
Cari Meister has written more than a hundred books for children, including the "Tiny" series (Penguin) and the "Meet the Monsters" series (Stone Arch Books). She has received many awards for her books. Most recently, "Airplane Adventure" (Stone Arch Books), was named to "Parents" magazine Best Books for 2010. Cari has been fascinated by the night sky ever since she can remember. Her love of space and stars led her to Space Camp when she was growing up. Today, Cari lives in the mountains of Colorado, with her husband, four boys, two horses and one dog.

Carolina was born in Bahía Blanca, Argentina. She graduated in 1993 becoming both a Professor and Bachelor of Arts specialized in drawing.  In 2005 she won the charge of Adjunt Teacher of the department of Drawing in the career of Visual Communication Design at the faculty of Bellas Artes.  In 2007 she was selected by the National Cultural Secretariat of Argentina as the illustrator for the XVI Feria del Libro of Habana, Cuba.  Carolina is currently working both as an illustrator and teacher.

I was born on the 7th of november 1986 in Cuneo, a city near Turin, Italy . As a young child, I was always drawing and painting and after my graduation I finally decided to make my great passion into a career! This was one of the best choice in my life. I attended a three years post diploma degree, with a master of Illustration at the IED of Turin, Italy, where I graduated in July 2008. During this experience I built up my artist’s skills, with a regardful eye to the juvenile illustration market. In 2010 I became part of the freelance Illustrators represented by the MB Artists of New York,  having the great possibility to work with several important publishers. This job is amazing and I just want to keep growing up in the great word of illustration, my job and my passion at the same time.

Eva Montanari was born in Rimini, Italy, in 1977. She started out as a children’s books author and illustrator while she was still a student, graduating from the State Institute of Art and the European Institute of Design in Milan. Now she is an internationally recognized artist that wrote and illustrated children books that have been published in Italy, United States, Japan, Taiwan, France, Spain, UK and Germany.

Polona Kosec was born in Ljubljana on a warm rainy day. Since the year 2006 she works as a freelance artist/illustrator. In 2009 she completed post-graduate qualification (a Master of Arts degree programme) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. She likes working with other people and has collaborated with a number of publishing houses and authors through the years. She does illustrations and character design for children's books and children's magazines as well as short commercial animation.

The book contains four excellent variations on the story. They are good for adults and literature students doing a comparison. The illustrations will appeal to both children and adults. There is a covert lesson in each story. Look for it and think.

This is a great children's book

This is a great children's book. It contains different versions of the cinderella story. I love the diversity that is in here. There are different cultures that are addressed. I will definitely be reading this to my niece soon!
