About the Author
Joe Hyams (1923-2008) was a columnist and bestselling author most known for his biographies of such Hollywood stars as Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, and Lauren Bacall. Hyams became involved in the martial arts during his service in the US Army, where he was frequently attacked for being Jewish. His years of studying with such figures as Bruce Lee and Ed Parker laid the groundwork for his 1979 book Zen in the Martial Arts.

Rapture! Bravo!

What a fantastic book. I just can't say it any better. I had to order this through an out-of-print book seller('The Book Nook', a wonderful company!), and that just added to the fun of reading it. This book has no bad points, whatsoever! I wish it was longer. Joe Hyams writing style is eloquent yet simple enough to bring out Jimmy's true nature. This is the most recent, in a string of 8 Dean biographies I've read, and it's such a necessity to any collection. To slightly contradict myself-my problem was only that it wasn't longer. Not a short read at all, the book was just so easy that it left you wanting to hear more about Jimmy from Mr. Hyams' perspective. It's the most objective standpoint anyone's taken on Jimmy, while still having a theme(angle)to write from. It's hard for me to find a bad Dean bio, simply because of my adoration of the young prodigy, but I can easily spot the great ones! Pick this book up. My used copy was in better shape than many new books I find at large bookstores. Again I must express my thanks to The Book Nook for making it possible for me to own this book, which I will utterly treasure. They work with amazon, so check them out.

Joe Hyams is a real respectful and informative author who really wanted to write about James Dean what I know James Dean would have written about himself if he were alive today and decided to write about his personal life, which is something James Dean did not like to talk about with the media. Yes, Jimmy did love Pier Angeli whose real name is Anna Maria Pierangeli whom he lovingly called Annarella. This was a name her father called her before he died in 1950. James Dean found a true love in Anna and she in him. There are countless interviews and documentaries that can attest to Jimmy stating that Pier Angeli was the love of his life. Actress Julie Harris, James Dean's co-star in East of Eden mentions in one documentary that Jimmy was always talking about how much in love he was with Pier and how beautiful her soul was. Larry King interviewed co-stars of his who spoke about this very emphatic relationship in James Dean's life. They had many interests and one very important life change in common that is they both lost a parent. Neither one ever forgot about the other and author Joe Hyams wanted to make that known. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. James Dean would be delighted that this part of his life, the joyful part, was written about.

About the Author
Mary Harrington received a B.S. in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University, an M.A, in Psychology from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in Behavioral, anatomical and Physiological Studies from Dalhousie University in Canada. Currently, she is the Tippit Professor in the Life Sciences at Smith College in Massachusetts. In addition, she is a member of the Neuroscience and Behavior Program at the University of Massachusetts as Amherst and an Adjunct Member of the Center for Neuro-endocrine Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Mary has published extensively in the Journals and has received research grants from NIH, NSF, Mellon Foundation and Pfizer. She is Associate Editor of the Journal of Neuroscience, Advisory Board Member for SOMAS (Support of mentors and their students in the neurosciences). She is an external reviewer for Neuroscience Program site visits and a Study Section Reviewer for NIH. She teaches various courses in the Psychology Department at both the undergraduate and graduate levels

Struggle through this book.

I've already added a note to someone else's review, but it is good information in a shabby form. I had to read 50 or 100 pages and take a break by reading something that is light and well edited (Perry Mason mystery). So, read it for the information and hopefully Kindle will get around to editing it for the next guy.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bevan's other Diadochi-history book

I thoroughly enjoyed Bevan's other Diadochi-history book, House of Seleucus, and had high expectations for this one. I was not disappointed. Considering that book costs a dollar, I cannot recommend it highly enough, as centralized source of information about Ptolemaic Egypt.

First, the flaws. This kindle version, as of writing, suffers from less-than-perfect editing: in various places words are obviously incorrectly transcribed. One can usually guess which word was meant, and I think I only noticed twenty such words. This version also appears to be missing Bevan's preface. I can't take off more than a star for this, however, given that this is the only kindle version out there, and is a recent one. Physical versions of this book go for twenty-times the price, so this is still an excellent deal. And, in any event, I am sure that at least the transcription errors will be fixed in later versions.

As for the substance, the work is a bit less exciting than House of Seleucus, though this is due not to Bevan but to the more indolent nature of the Ptolemies, who spent less time conquering and more time feasting. There is a lot more discussion of administrative organization and the relationship of the Macedonian Ptolemies to the ancient culture of Egypt, along with some very lengthy excerpts from important Egyptian inscriptions, including the Rosetta Stone.

Though the tone is academic, Bevan does not cite his sources in the modern academic way (just as in House of Seleucus). However, he discusses his sources, especially when there is a controversy between them or a reference is particularly obscure. The point is that although the work is obviously well-researched, one does not get page citations. I do not think that page citations make a good history book, so no stars lost here.

Illustrations are few: one per chapter, usually showing the visage of the relevant Ptolemy. But this is not the sort of book that one gets for the pictures.

Highly recommended, despite some flaws in editing.

Not just a financial advisor book

My initial expectations of the book when I received it was that it was going to contain facts, statistics and possibly history of financial advisors. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it was a fictional story of an advisor who is discovering a different view on life. The book is easy to read but the concepts are deeper. What this book outlays took me quite a few years to understand. I also did not have the privilege to get all those concepts from one book or source. The author does accurately describe the concepts to be simple, but my own experience indicates to that the application is a lot harder to live. This book is more about bringing awareness of the things that hold us captive, to a life that we may unknowingly choose, but if brought into view may not. I normally read many books and at the time I received the book I was half way through another book, but after just reading the first few pages I continued to read until I finished it. It is an intriguing and fun read. But its not just for the advisor, really it can be for anyone who is looking to have a more successful and happy life.

FELT LIKE I WAS READING MY LIFE STORY!

This book was not what I expected. I thought it was going be another sales book like the ones I have read over the years. I was wrong. Since the book is really a "story", it is easy reading. Early on I realized that the main character was a lot like me. It made me really think about how I live my life, and how I run my business. I have been an advisor for 25 years. Before I read the book, I thought I myself and my business. "The Journey" makes you pause, and think about how you go through life, day in day out, doing the same thing and expecting different results. This book has movivated me to change how I view life, family and of course my business. I read the book in about three hours. I would recommend it to any financial advisor, who is in the business for a long time, and has had a difficult time growing their business. I hope to implement many of the ideas and concepts I read about.

Ken does an amazing job of weaving some great life lessons into a very entertaining story. This is a must read for anyone, in any profession, looking to make substantive changes to their personal and professional lives. Don't let the sub title "Evolution of a Financial Advisor" mislead you, the concepts and techniques Ken describes can be applied by any professional that interacts with others in the course of their business and personal experience. A bargain for one of western philosophy's seminal collections.

An excellent collection of Descartes' major works. I have always loved reading Descartes as opposed to say Kant because his prose flows easily without compromising depth. His Meditations deserve special mention because they are considered must-read for getting a handle on the basics of western philosophy (early modernism). The Kindle version is quite easy to navigate. For this price the question should be - even if you have these works in hardcopy why would you not get the Kindle edition for portability and ease of use?

Classic

Of course, Descartes is a classic for the early period of modernism. I would recommend that in his meditations, the reader give special attention to 3 and 5. He is actually offering a basis for an anthropological argument for the existence of God. In any case, he is an easy read and well worth your time.

Giovanni (a self-confessed moniker for a famous Milanese fashion photographer) continues to focus on an obsession/admiration for that object of historic dispute - the male phallus. For centuries art vogues have either lauded the masculine symbol for fertility and power, whether in sculpture of the Greeks or paintings of the Renaissance, or those passing fads have draped or even lopped off the au courant offending organ. While Giovanni is far from the only artist to finally bring full frontal male nudity to the same spotlight once monopolized by female nudity, he is one of the major voices working today who focuses his art away from fashion on the male penis.

With Bruno Gmünder Verlag he has successfully produce collector item quality books - Private Part, Bites, Oversized, Bites XXL, Un*/Cut, Supersized Absolute Penis (in addition to the collaborative volumes Jewels, Cock Tales, etc) and now MEMBERS ONLY - and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess the meaning of the word `member.'
