About the Author
Linda Bierds has been awarded fellowships from the MacArthur, John Simon Guggenheim, Ingram-Merrill, Wolfers-O’Neill, and Rockefeller Foundations; and has received the PEN West Poetry Prize, the Poetry Society of America’s Consuelo Ford Award, the Virginia Quarterly Review’s Emily Clark Balch Poetry Prize, and two National Endowment for the Arts grants. Her work has appeared widely, in publications such as The Atlantic, Field, The Kenyon Review, The New Yorker, Parnassus, and The Virginia Quarterly Review, to name a few. She lives on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Poems That Prove There's No Line Dividing Science from Art

Once again, Bierds delights her fans with poems grounded in science, history and biography. It's obvious that she spent weeks if not months of research, coupled with exacting writing and editing, to produce each of her poems.
Personally, I enjoy reading her work a first time just for the sharp imagery, unexpected turns of phrase, and bits of captivating science and history that don't often appear in poems. Then I take my enjoyment to the next level by doing some research of my own, often on the Internet, to increase my understanding of the subjects Bierds so accurately and beautifully portrays in her poems. Such additional effort isn't necessary to appreciate the loveliness of her language, the careful unfolding of her subject, and the unexpected relationships she draws between science and the metaphysical, but her poems ask the reader to come into them further, to join them in an exploration of ideas and human experience, and it's hard to say no to their invitations.
These are poems in which to dally, to re-read, and to say to oneself, "Yes! Humans practicing science, humans practicing art, can never get it quite right, but in their erring, in their slightly missing the mark, they create."
So much thought-provoking material packed into such concise poems! Here's a sample from her poem "Steller's Jay": "What good is structure against a world already structured by chaos?" Good question! It deserves some serious thought.
Take time out of your busy schedule to enjoy poems in which Peter Mark Roget, Dr. Nicolaas Tulp, Albrecht Durer, Michael Faraday, Virginia Woolf and others encounter the metaphysical in their exploration of the physical universe. It will be time well spent.

Fascinating, but often over my head

Roget’s Illusion is a quirk of filmmaking where a spinning wheel appears to move backward. The idea is a lesser-known contribution of the man who is best known for his thesaurus. Each of the three sections in this collection begins with a poem exploring Roget, his words, and his observations. Other poems cover art and artists, nature and science, words and…life. I’ll admit my tastes in poetry normally run toward silly rhyming children’s verse – Jack Prelutsky is my favorite. This collection is, unsurprisingly, nothing like that. It does, however, explore the world with an almost childlike wonder.
The sense of wonder and curiosity is childlike, but the words and style are definitely not. Each poem shares detailed information about the topic, but little details – things that may seem insignificant in an overview, but provide a more intimate understanding of the topic at hand. The breadth covered is pretty amazing. I've always considered myself well-rounded, even leaning toward the arts, but I just didn't have the background knowledge to appreciate a lot of the poems. Google helped a lot. I found the ideas contained in the poems fascinating, though I would probably prefer to read them with the clarity of prose.
