Not enough good content. Not worth the money. Too much content fillers.
By Nemanja N.
The book is only 5 chapters about 230 pages. Now for some books that much content is enough but I don't feel that is the case with this book. It easily can be shortened by 1/4. Why? Well 1/4 of the book are console output prints, code examples, and a few screenshots. I can live with code examples but console outputs...come on.

The book does give you some introduction to spring boot and lets you build a simple application. However, i did not have an AH-HA moment. Everything I read in this book I already read on the spring's website. So, the book is not $45 worth, the most I'd pay for this is $10-$15. Oh well, you live and learn.

Learning Boot Spring is certainly a great option for those who want to understand the basic operation of Spring Boot. The author Greg L. Turnquist is direct and to the point gives the message.
You need prior knowledge of the Spring platform to better use.
The author leaves to be desired when addresses some important issues such as integration with Groovy, security or services.
Examples are in style "Hello world" and in some cases not very useful.

A year later - Still the best starting point for Spring Boot
By Derek P.
I got this book a long time ago. It is now August of 2015 and I first encountered the book the day it was released. The man who wrote this book is a personal acquaintance of mine and I assure you is extremely knowledgeable and qualified to inform you about anything Spring Framework related. Greg has been hands on with Spring Boot since it was first released from Pivotal - not sure but I believe he worked on the project. He is also the author of all the "Getting Started with Spring Guides" found on the spring.io website.

Now - why am I deciding to write a review on this product almost a year later?

Because someone stated early on that this book wasn't going to be useful very long because of the high pace of velocity that Spring Boot has and will endure upon it's first year as a project. Meaning - that you really shouldn't spend money on a book when the project will grow updated - making the book outdated - quickly.

I just went through every example in the book and read it from front to back (again) using Spring Boot 1.2.5 RELEASE. Every example works. This book is a FOUNDATIONAL resource in GETTING STARTED with Spring Boot. You will need to first - Learn the Spring Framework at some point during your time building Spring Boot applications. Spring is a huge ecosystem with many moving parts and you may build an application but not know the what and how of what is being done. The book covers the basics starting with the Spring Boot CLI (Linux users only - really) which coming from Windows until recently hadn't really been able to use and what a shame because it is a wonderful tool. All the basics are here plus a little more. It is comprehensive guide for beginners and I bet a majority of people who would still buy it today will find that it helped them get started into the wonderful world of Spring Boot quickly and efficiently. Thanks Greg for a wonderful book that is still relevant a year later.
