Pirate Utopias: Moorish Corsairs & European Renegadoes, by Peter Lamborn Wilson

From the 16th to the 19th centuries, Moslem corsairs from the Barbary Coast ravaged European shipping and enslaved thousands of unlucky captives. During this same period, thousands more Europeans converted to Islam and joined the pirate holy war. Were these men (and women) the scum of the seas, apostates, traitors—Renegadoes? Or did they abandon and betray Christendom as a praxis of social resistance? Second edition, with new material documenting piracy in the very early days of New York City.

Not bad
By Powwowdoctor
Wilson starts out this work rather well, and it seems that the whole book will be equally enthralling. However, IMHO, a little more than half-way through he gets bogged down about the Sally Rovers in Ireland. I really wanted much more about Rabat-Sale.

Ahoy Ye Sally Rovers!
By Amazon Customer
I like Pirate movies, hey almost everyone does...

But now I want a "Sally Rover" movie (Arab Piracy) both as a historical tribute and a spit in the eye to established authority and especially "American Imperialism NeoCONartist / NeoCOLONIALism". It'd be awesome to make, an assault on the senses. Pirates with turbans, corrupt European officials set against each other like bugs in a jar, white as well as black slavery, an Islamic city of both vice and virtue, saints and scoundrels together.

Kind of a past history, a "Wild West" time for Burroughs's "Interzone". Have belly dancers in hashish dens/coffeehouses. Massage parlors that hint at real naughty stuff. Have a Sufi saint do miracles, but also be a friend perhaps to the pirates. Plenty of philosophy, from Sufi wisdom to proto anarchist thought.

Depends on your expectations
By The trebuchet
Those familiar with this author know his areas of interest and what to expect from him in general, but in this case the particular subject matter imposes some additional constraints. Those who have done any reading on pirates in general know that it's very difficult to find a book that's actually interesting that doesn't wander too far off into wild speculation (or downright fiction). Pirates of any kind were not, for the most part, prolific writers; there are few first-hand accounts of their lives to draw from. In this book Wilson counts on his reader to be understanding of the difficulties he faces in trying to put together the story of the Corsairs and Renegadoes, and for the most part his effort is interesting enough to make you forget its shortcomings.

Wilson's account centers on the corsair republic of Sale, which presents a particular challenge in that there is less documentary evidence for him to work with than the better-known corsair enclaves in Algiers. Nonetheless he leans heavily on the sources he does have, and I thought I was in for a rough read when, about halfway through the book, he included a chapter that was essentially page after page of quoted material, with only a sentence or two of his own writing to break it up.

This does not last for too long, however, as the later portions of the book get more speculative and interesting. The author's usual areas of interest are all in play: Islamic mysticism, egalitarian/anarchist ideals, a sprinkling of vice and pederasty, etc. Some of his speculations are particularly dubious, as when he concludes that the Renegadoes were cannabis users based primarily on a single hand-drawn sketch of three men laughing, but for the most part Wilson is good about not attempting to pass these things off as historic fact. It is just that his primary interest is in the way things *could* have been, and admittedly this is far more interesting than the little we know about how it actually was.

It may not be a great book, but all in all Wilson knows his audience well, and if you came here looking for this book (as opposed to a casual browser), you will probably not be disappointed.

A Scientific Adventure: Reflections on the Riddle of Relativity, by Ian McCausland

This book is a description of the author’s studies and publications concerning Einstein’s special relativity theory over a forty-year period starting in 1971. In the early part of that period he collaborated with Professor Herbert Dingle in the latter’s campaign against the special theory, and after Dingle’s death in 1978 he continued to advance this program and to draw attention to the unsatisfactory situation whereby many arguments in favour of relativity are accepted without question by almost all scientists in spite of numerous contradictions. One of Dingle’s criticisms of the special theory is presented in an appendix, with a commentary.

Potential Readers
By B. Boomer
This book is very readable. I'll comment on three potential audiences, namely, the young (college student or even smart high school student), the layman looking to understand science and the physics professor. Comments for all three may be helpful to all. First, the book is not a primer on special relativity. Rather it discusses a great debate about the Twin Paradox and about the validity of special relativity itself. All readers should have a basic, conceptual understanding of special relativity before reading the book. The book, as I recall, contains no equations - not because they've been removed for readability, but rather because the physics issues are ones of concepts, logic and common sense.

The student reader will learn that what's taught in college/textbooks is not necessarily the one and only immutable truth. Furthermore, as opposed to a textbook that imparts knowledge, the book will teach one how to think for oneself as one follows the interplay of conflicting ideas. One may even become better prepared mentally for paradigm shifts to come. Also, while one's peers see what's written on the blackboard in relativity class and possibly other classes, one will see the subtext as well.

Similarly, the layman looking to understand science will get not only a good science detective story, but a demonstration that physics, like all human endeavors, involves politics, psychology, ideology, egos, flaws, deceit, etc.

The physics professor could well be the reader who would benefit the most from reading the book, not because it requires that depth of knowledge, but because it will give fresh insights.

The book gives a lot of detailed history and analysis of Dingle and McCausland, both very well respected professors, evolving into critics first of the "resolutions" of the Twin Paradox and then critics of special relativity itself and the opposition they encountered. Some of the middle chapters are models for developing effective logic arguments. At the end, McCausland covers and documents "Science and Criticism" and "Censorship in Science". The physics, logic and the latter Criticism/Censorship topics are documented in depth primarily, but by no means exclusively, drawing on Dingle's and McCausland's experiences.

McCausland has packed most chapters with great quotes - I find myself continually "borrowing' those quotes in my writings.

Some reading tips: A few chapters have many sentences with short citations in parenthetical clauses because the back and forth exchanges are meticulously documented. At first, this slowed me down, but then my eyes just jumped over the parenthetical clauses noting that all was well documented. Part of chapter 3 discussed the effects of acceleration in the Twin Paradox with valid points, but it was a tangent that was peripheral to the main thread and can be skimmed. Similarly, a discussion of Ritz at the end of chapter 5 is also tangential and can be skimmed. Other than those two items, the thesis was a coherent whole even though multi-faceted.

An adventure in unorthodox physics
By THOMAS E. PHIPPS
Early in the education of physicists they learn to see special relativity theory as the holy of holies. They are told, on the basis of the "relativity principle," that (symmetrical) relative motion is all that counts. Indeed, a single parameter, the relative velocity v of two inertial systems, suffices to define a complete kinematics. Yet the same theory teaches, in the case of the famous relatively-traveling twins, that their aging is asymmetrical. Whence comes this asymmetry? Certainly not from the parameter v. Acceleration, to be sure, is asymmetrical, but that does not disturb the kinematic symmetry of the purely relative motion. Thus arises an enduring puzzle that has perturbed relativity critics over the years. One such was Herbert Dingle, who notably held out against the physics profession. Early in his career he wrote on relativity and was deemed an Authority. But later, when he became an Apostate, he was widely accused of "not understanding" relativity. The fascinating tale of science run amok that centers on the Dingle controversy is the main subject of Ian McCausland's important little book. It is to be recommended to anyone interested in physics whose thinking is not controlled by Authority and whose mind is open on the subject of ultimate truth in science.

Thank God for Herbert Dingle!
By Oracle
It is amazing that this discussion has now gone on for more than 100 years while any schoolchild who knows the Theorem of Pythagoras should know that Einstein's interpretation of time is not just wrong but absurdly impossible. The quadratic length r^2 of a position vector in 2D space is given in terms of Cartesian coordinates x and y, as r^2=x^2+y^2; WHERE r IS THE HYPOTENUSE OF A RIGHT TRIANGLE. According to Einstein and Minkowski one can also have a hypotenuse that is valid as the magnitude of a position-vector when setting y^2=-(ct)^2 so that r^2=x^2-(ct)^2. This is obviously impossible since the latter equation can ONLY satisfy the Theorem of Pythagoras when x is the hypotenuse; since only then one has that x^2=r^2+(ct)^2: IT MUST BE PLUS!!!!! This means that x must now be the hypotenuse NOT r anymore.

The simple incontrovertible fact is that in Special Relativity the disance ct is ALWAYS a hypotenuse in real space. It has NOTHING to do with an imaginary component. The Lorentz equations result from the fact the ct is ALWAYS a hypotenuse and these equations can therefore be derived without invoking the imaginary number i=SQRT(-1). This is done in the following books by Jonah F Inkosana (a) Why Galileo Trumps Einstein (b) Why does E=mc*2: It is Forshaw not a CockxUP. It is found that when a moving a source at position x' from O (relative to which it is moving) emits a wavefront at the instant in time t', this SAME wavefront only appears relative to O at a LATER TIME t and at a FURTHER DISTANCE x from O. This is demanded since the wavefront is not emitted in aether. Thus t' and t are two different times as they actually MUST be since the SAME instant in time CANNOT be two different times EVER! Time passes at the SAME rate within ALL inertial reference frames. If this were not so Galileo's principle of relativity would be WRONG and thus also SR which is based on this principle! The twins will be the same age!

What has been done by the mainstream theoretical physicists to Prof Herbert Dingle is a scandal that is only rivalled by what Galileo had to endure. The fact that these mainstream theoretical physicists could for 100 years not even grasp the Theorem of Pythagoras, means that 20th century theoretical physics, from Einstein's General Theory of Relativity to the Standard Model of Particle Physics must be seriously flawed. But are the mainstream theoretical physicists in charge of physics ever going to admit it, or even admit that it is possible; as one expects from honoutrable physicists with INTEGRITY? From my personal experience I do not think so. They have too much to loose. Therefore "peer review" has become censorship which would have done the inquisition proud. Carver Mead is right: Physics is truly within the Dark Ages.

Jane Eyre (Bantam Classics), by Charlotte Bronte

Charlotte Brontë’s impassioned novel is the love story of Jane Eyre, a plain yet spirited governess, and her employer, the arrogant, brooding Mr. Rochester. Published in 1847 under the pseudonym Currer Bell, the book heralded a new kind of heroine—one whose virtuous integrity, keen intellect, and tireless perseverance broke through class barriers to win equal stature with the man she loved. Hailed by William Makepeace Thackeray as “the masterwork of a great genius,” Jane Eyre is still regarded, over a century later, as one of the finest novels in English literature.

From the Back Cover
An orphan who endures a harsh childhood, Jane Eyre becomes governess at Thornfield Hall in the employment of the mysterious Mr. Rochester. Jane's moral pilgrimage and the maturity of Charlotte Bronte's characterization are celebrated aspects of the novel, as is its imagery and narrative power. Rapidly reprinted following its first publication in 1847, Jane Eyre still enjoys huge popularity as one of the finest novels in the English language.

About the Author
Emily Jane Brontë was the most solitary member of a unique, tightly-knit, English provincial family. Born in 1818, she shared the parsonage of the town of Haworth, Yorkshire, with her older sister, Charlotte, her brother, Branwell, her younger sister, Anne, and her father, The Reverend Patrick Brontë. All five were poets and writers; all but Branwell would publish at least one book.

Fantasy was the Brontë children’s one relief from the rigors of religion and the bleakness of life in an impoverished region. They invented a series of imaginary kingdoms and constructed a whole library of journals, stories, poems, and plays around their inhabitants. Emily’s special province was a kingdom she called Gondal, whose romantic heroes and exiles owed much to the poems of Byron.

Brief stays at several boarding schools were the sum of her experiences outside Haworth until 1842, when she entered a school in Brussels with her sister Charlotte. After a year of study and teaching there, they felt qualified to announce the opening of a school in their own home, but could not attract a single pupil.

In 1845 Charlotte Brontë came across a manuscript volume of her sister’s poems. She knew at once, she later wrote, that they were “not at all like poetry women generally write…they had a peculiar music–wild, melancholy, and elevating.” At her sister’s urging, Emily’s poems, along with Anne’s and Charlotte’s, were published pseudonymously in 1846. An almost complete silence greeted this volume, but the three sisters, buoyed by the fact of publication, immediately began to write novels. Emily’s effort was Wuthering Heights; appearing in 1847 it was treated at first as a lesser work by Charlotte, whose Jane Eyre had already been published to great acclaim. Emily Brontë’s name did not emerge from behind her pseudonym of Ellis Bell until the second edition of her novel appeared in 1850.

In the meantime, tragedy had struck the Brontë family. In September of 1848 Branwell had succumbed to a life of dissipation. By December, after a brief illness, Emily too was dead; her sister Anne would die the next year. Wuthering Heights, Emily’s only novel, was just beginning to be understood as the wild and singular work of genius that it is. “Stronger than a man,” wrote Charlotte, “Simpler than a child, her nature stood alone.”

Review
"At the end we are steeped through and through with the genius, the vehemence, the indignation of Charlotte Brontë."—Virginia Woolf

The only edition to buy
By Joseph Guyer
This review is aimed more toward the Norton edition than to JANE EYRE. We all know this is a classic. Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)

As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.

Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

wuthering heights editions
By Jordi Vilalta Lopez
Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:

A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).

1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation,
excellent introduction.

2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.

3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.

4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.

5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.

B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).

6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).

7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.

7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on the
Clarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.

8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in too
many of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.

9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Do not miss out on this book...
By KayBee
You know all those 'classic' novels you read in high school? How many of them do you actually remember? Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best.

There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.

Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.

AMAZING Cryptography Thriller
By Lisa N.
For anyone who is a fan of Dan Brown like books, you will absolutely LOVE Rusell Blake's book. The lead character Dr. Steven Cross, is an amateur cryptographer who gets pulled into a quest surrounding a 15th century relic. The story is filled with suspense, code breaking, travel around the work with just right amount of violence and romance. This is one of the best code breaking books I have since reading Da Vinci Code. I have purchased the rest of Russell Blake's book and can't wait to read more. ABSOLUTELY Worth Your Time!

Loved this book
By Kevin
First i am not the kind of reader that picks apart grammer etc. I let the story come to me and take it in for what it is. That said i loved the story and the characters. Once i started i could not put it down and finished in two days of reading. This book is every bit as good as Dan Brown and comes close to Steve Berry in my opinion. So if you like this genre you will like this book. On to my third book King of Swords by Blake next.

Just my kind of thing
By Chris
OK, I admit it, I eat this stuff up--Dan Brown, National Treasure, that kind of thing. I'm not even really sure why, but it's my favorite kind of conspiracy--religion, treasure, mystery, cover-ups, traitors, hot pursuits. I could read that kind of book all day (sometimes I do!). This is a great example of the genre. Genuine mystery, enough research in there so you learn something and are convinced, and enough action and plot twists to keep it thrilling. Nothing extraneous in this story--if it's in the book, it's there for a reason. Classic Blake.

Ever since Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed first called the records he was playing "rock and roll," northeast Ohio has been a driving force in this musical phenomenon. From the disc jockeys who spun the music to the musicians who played it, the clubs that welcomed it and fans who encouraged it, rock and roll has been as much a part of this north coast as the lake that hugs it. It was those early years, from the 1950s on, that led Cleveland to becoming the "Rock and Roll Capital of the World" and ultimately home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. While the city spawned several widely recognized names, such as the James Gang (with Joe Walsh), the Raspberries (with Eric Carmen), and Bobby Womack, it is the music itself that will keep this town rocking on the shores of Lake Erie, and beyond, for a long time to come.

The T-54 and T-55 tanks are the most widely manufactured tanks of all time. They have become ubiquitous to wars around the globe since the 1950s, starting with Hungary in 1956, and including the the Arab-Israeli wars of 1967, 1973 and 1982, the Vietnam war of 1967-75, the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-88, the Afghanistan conflict, Operation Desert Storm, the Yugoslav Civil Wars, and the recent conflict in Iraq. This book will examine the roots of this prolific tank family, starting with the Soviet Army's first attempts to replace the legendary T-34 during World War II, and covering the T-43 and the T-44, the more successful T-54, and its ultimate evolution into the T-55.

Excellent and informative book on an important Soviet AFV

Steven Zaloga is one of my favorite authors on tanks and AFVs. This volume does not disappoint. The T54/55 tank is one of the most numerous and successful Soviet tanks ever developed. Over 40,000 of these tanks are used all over the world. Zaloga does a great job of describing the development of the T54 and T55 tanks and the variant models. He also includes various sections which explain the upgrade versions of the T55, the Chinese copies of the T54 (called the T-59 and T-69), and the combat performance of the T54/55. What I always appreciate about Zaloga is that he inserts helpful information such as the armor penetration of the 100mm D-10T guns (e.g. compare the HVAP round which penetrates 200mm with the latest UBM6 APSDS round which can penetrate up to 290 mm at 2km against a vertical target)and the armor upgrades of the T55. As always in this series, the colored plates and illustrations are excellent. Zaloga packs in so much information in 47 pages! Highly recommended!!

Infamous T-55
By matt8386
Author Steve Zaloga is probably the best expert on Soviet equipment. This book is an update to the earlier Vanguard Soviet Modern tanks published back in 1984. Ironic that the older book has more photos (two) of the interior than this book (one). If you've studied modern armor or warfare, then you know of the T-55. It traces its lineage from the T-34 of WW2 fame, continuing the Russian concept of small, easily built tanks that are highly mobile and simple to use. The down side is that they are lighter, less protected and not comfortable for their crews.

This is an excellent primer on the T-55, perhaps the best of what is available right now. The photos tend to be small, but crisp B&W. There are six pages of color plates to show the paint schemes and two pages for a vehicle cut away. The one comment I have on these New Vanguard series - not enough coverage on the interior. I think each crew position should be shown, hence only four stars. Balancing that out is very good narrative and overview of the tanks's history and use in combat. Recommended for all armor buffs & modelers.

A decent general overview of the most important variants of T-54/T-55 series
By Jacek Lubecki
The book is a very succinct overview of the most important variants of the T-54/55 tank series. The best part of the book are details regarding Russian and Chinese development of the different versions of the tank. However, the work is by no means an exhaustive treatment of the topic - the book is simply way too short to cover the full spectrum of variants, visual images and technical details regarding the most widely used tank of post-World War II era. If you want a short introduction and basic facts, this is a work for you, but for information and images of a particular version of the tank one might have to look for other sources.
