Healing Neen: One Woman's Path to Salvation from Trauma and Addiction, by Tonier Cain

"Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…" – Joshua 24:15 (NIV)

It is almost unfathomable to believe that just nine years ago Neen was in prison―a place as familiar to her as the streets she lived on. In just 15 years, she had been arrested 83 times with 66 convictions. Neen had–and lost–four children, she was a crack addict, a prostitute, and desperately lost. But as long as she had breath, she would still have hope. One day, after 19 years hustling on the streets of Annapolis, Neen's crumb of hope turned into a seed of trust.

"Then I will make up to you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten…" – Joel 2:25 (NASV)

Healing Neen isn't just another story about victims and survivors or recovery and redemption; ultimately, it is a story of Good News and a testament to God's grace and presence. It is the story of a woman's path to salvation and a propitious glimpse into the potential buried deep within some of society's most vulnerable people.

"See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven, their angels always see the face of my Father, who is in heaven." – Matthew 18:10 (ESV)

But this story isn't just about Neen; it's about the value of human life, the depth of suffering, and the heights of grace. It is a convincing cri de Coeur for better practices in the way we treat and counsel those caught in the cycles of trauma, addiction, and serial incarceration. Neen brings us face-to-face with the ubiquitous corruption, neglect, and abuse in some of the systems meant to safeguard at-risk women and children, yet she leaves us with hope that things can change for the better.

Today, Tonier Cain's calling is to help save thousands of other "Neens" across the nation. She is a leading advocate for trauma-informed care in prisons and mental health facilities. She is a champion for examining and improving the way we help one another toward redemption, and she is the voice of compassion and promise for so many still living on the fringe who need to hear, "where there's breath, there's hope.

About the Author

Tonier 'Neen' Cain, is a force of nature. For two decades she hustled on the streets desperately feeding an insatiable crack addiction and racking up 83 arrests along the way. In 2004, pregnant and incarcerated for violation of parole, she was provided the opportunity to go to a community trauma, mental health and addictions program.

Feeling safe for the first time in her life, Neen confronted her haunting childhood memories: filth and chronic hunger, sexual assaults by neighborhood men, routine physical and mental abuse

Introduction

'Miss Cain. Kin I speak to you?'

'Sure. Tell me what's happening with you.' I walk over to a young woman dressed in gray prison garb. I am at the Maryland Institute for Women, where I'd been an inmate. I'm here now as a featured speaker to discuss trauma-informed care. As I approach her, she begins to cry.

'I lost my five children to the system. And I need help. Kin I attend your session?' Just the mention of a mother losing her children touches my heart. I know that pain. So I ask the warden if this woman can be a part of the small group session tomorrow evening, and she agrees.

I hug the woman and promise, 'If you allow me, I'll help you. I won't leave you.' I know the feeling of helplessness when the system designed to help fails. I know the despair when no one steps up to help you. It's one thing to be down, but it's another when you see no possibility of getting up, when being down becomes a way of life. I knew both. I'd been there.

The next evening in a small group session, this inmate tells me of a life of abuse that includes drug use and all that goes with it. As she cries and pours out her heart to me and the other women seated in a circle, I hear my story, or at least a form of my story. And I think, But for the grace of God, I could still be here or dead. I connect this inmate to a program that will allow her to get the assistance she needs to regain control of her life. The program includes trauma therapy, which will help her identify and acknowledge the things that had been done to her that contributed to her behavior.

This is my life now. I travel the country telling policy makers Neen's story. Neen is a form of my middle name that my family called me. It represents a past that almost destroyed my future; however, because of the intervention I received through trauma therapy, I emerged from that life and from the cycle the women I now speak to live in. Now I am committed to helping others break free from the shackles of secrecy that surround the abuse often caused by traumatic events.

Neen's story is not pretty. It shines the light of truth on the shady side of life in America. Much of it takes place in the dirty places of a beautiful city. It's about the smelly people you turn your head away from on the street corners and the ones you never think could be you or the ones you love. While the sad reality of Neen's story is that it continues to be repeated across this nation, there is hope for a happy ending. Because I broke the cycle and emerged stronger, I am able to offer a message of healing for others. No matter where you are on your journey, the message is: 'Where there is breath, there is hope.'

Chapter 1

Rough Beginnings

Beware that you don't look down
on any of these little ones. For I tell you
that in heaven their angels are always in
the presence of my heavenly Father.
―Matthew 18:10

'Life happens' is more than a bumper sticker; it's a reality that I know all too well. Life happened to me, although I didn't realize it at the time. From a very early age, people did things to me. I don't know if they singled me out or if I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I do know that, almost from the beginning of life as I knew it, things were done to me. As I grew older, I began to realize that the things that were being done to me were bad, but I was powerless to stop them or to get away from them. So 'life' continued to happen, and I kept living as best I knew. Life was not always easy.

I'm not asking for sympathy; I'm simply telling the truth. I didn't have a good childhood, my teenage years were a drunken blur, married life was a disaster, my relationship with my mom was whacked, and the list goes on. I'd failed at so many things. I'd even failed at motherhood. But in the midst of all these happenings, I never gave up, because I believed that, as long as I had breath, there would always be a chance that my life could change.

There were times and places in my life when I thought my life would end, and, given the way I was living, it should've ended. I've been beaten and raped, almost had my head smashed in, used dirty needles, and smoked enough crack cocaine to heat a small third world country, but Someone kept me, and something kept me going. I didn't grow up in a churchgoing family, but I believed that, even in my lowest moments, there would be a better tomorrow. It was what kept me going in the midst of having things happen to me that were so horrific that, to this day, I am ashamed to speak of them; not because of who I am, but because of what other people did to an innocent child who couldn't defend herself. What happened to me was a 'low-down, dirty shame.'

I was born and grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, home to the U.S. Naval Academy and the capital city of the state of Maryland. It's a beautiful city, but Annapolis is a city of opposites: rich and poor. On one side of town are the wealthy people with yachts and big homes. On the other side of town are the projects. Strangely enough, one exists without seemingly knowing the other exists. When I was growing up in the projects, it was all I knew. For me it is the place of my birth and the beginning of my life of pleasure and pain.

There are many things from my childhood that I just don't remember. When I first became aware, I was about four years old. I was Tonier, and I lived with my mother, Barbara, and my father, Oatmeal, whose real name is Vernon Johnson. I had a sister named Bridget, and two brothers named Vernon Jr. and Carlos. We lived together in a two-story apartment in the projects.

Since I didn't know any other life, I accepted what I saw and heard in my mother and father's house. Sometime early in my childhood, I learned the sounds of living. No one taught me. No one said, 'This is how you should live,' or 'This is how you shouldn't live.' I became accustomed to how my parents treated each other and how they treated us. To me, 'normal' was a life where people had fights and cussed at each other. I accepted what was because it was all I knew.

Oatmeal and Barbara fought a lot. It was one of the sounds I learned to recognize early on. Oatmeal would slap Barbara and push her down, and she'd scream at him. The sound of screaming, cussing, and hitting scared me and made me feel like there were butterflies in my stomach. I'd start to shake, the feeling would move into my chest, and my heart would start to beat really fast. Then the sound of fighting would move into my head. It wasn't a loud sound, but it made my heart beat even faster, and it filled my ears. Years later when I listened to a conch shell, it reminded me of that sound. Sometimes the sound took my breath away.

I remember screaming, 'Stop! Barbara! Oatmeal!' But Barbara couldn't hear me above her own voice or Oatmeal's sounds. I'd be crying; everyone would be crying. But the crying didn't stop the beating, so I learned to hide from the sound. I learned to crawl into a ball and hold my ears. It didn't help. I could still hear, and so I cried and hid because Oatmeal was hitting Barbara. I learned when the talking became the sound that started the fight. It's strange what little children quickly learn.

'I ain't scared of you, Oatmeal! You can't make me do nothing. I still don't know why I married your sorry ass.' That was Barbara's voice. Oatmeal said something back. Then Barbara said, 'You can go now. Here! Take your shit and get out. Here, I'll help you. Take your ring. Naw. I tell you what, I'll put it where you can go―in the toilet.'

'Go get it!' Oatmeal's sound was so loud.

'Get it your damn self. You want it.' Then Oatmeal dragged Barbara down the hall to the bathroom. He had her by the back of the head, pulling her by her hair.

'You gone get it out of that toilet, or I'll flush you down behind it. Now get it.' I guess Barbara couldn't get the ring because Oatmeal tried to put Barbara's head down the toilet. She was screaming; he was screaming. But this time even my screaming didn't make him stop.

There were a lot of scenes like this when I lived with Barbara and Oatmeal. Usually, they made up, followed by a lot of hugging and kissing. Then life went back the way it used to be until she made him mad again, and the sound would lead to another fight. I remember once we were at my grandmother Mil's house and Oatmeal punched his hand through a glass trying to hit Barbara. Years later when I learned about abuse, I knew that I'd grown up watching my father abuse my mother.

Once the sound of them fighting made me so sick, I couldn't breathe. They stopped fighting, and Barbara took me to the window and held my head outside so I could breathe. It was hot, and I couldn't stop throwing up. Nothing Barbara did made me better, so she took me to a doctor, who said I had asthma. When I woke up, I was in a big white tent. Looking for a window to breathe out of, like I did at home, I couldn't find one through the plastic. Scared, I yelled, 'Barbara!' No one answered. 'Barbara!' I was really scared because I couldn't remember where I was or how I'd gotten there. There were other beds in the room, but I didn't know who was in them. I kept calling for Barbara to come and get me. I wanted her to take me home. With all my four-year-old being, I wanted Barbara.

I never called Barbara 'Mama' or 'Mommie' or 'Mudear,' like the other children called their mamas. She was always Barbara. I don't know why, but my brothers, sister, and I always called her by her first name. I know now that names are important, but I was never taught to call her 'Mama' or call Oatmeal 'Daddy' or 'Dad.' All I knew then was that I was in a strange place, and I wanted Barbara.

'Barbara! Please come get me!!' But no one came to answer my call. I couldn't understand why Barbara would leave me. Didn't she love me anymore? 'I love you, Barbara. I love you. I'm scared. Please come get me.' After a while, I learned that no one would come when I cried, but it didn't stop me from crying. Why were they doing this to me? Why?

COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN . . .
By Don Vince
An amazing book by an amazing determined young woman. My introduction to Tonier Cain came when I began to get more informed about Trauma Focused treatment in my role as a Social Work educator. I saw the visual documentary of her life that goes by the same name as the book, "Healing Neen." I was amazed at her resilience and all that she had done to overcome her adversity in such a short period of time when after 19 years, someone finally asked the question, "What happened to you?" That documentary taught me more about trauma and its effects on an individual than all of the other lectures that I had attended on the subject and the research that I had read. I was determined to read Ms. Cain's book to get even more of an insight into her life and the importance of focusing on the trauma of an individual. The book did not disappoint. I literally could not put it down and read it in record time, not because I'm a fast reader, but because of the fact that it was so captivating. I highly recommend it.

I am really enjoying this series of Kitten, Garrett and Thomas. Lord Frye played some really scary scenes with Kitten. And they strangely hot. I love how everyone is together. Looking forward to find out what happens next.

The next chapter in Kitten's story is, if possible, hotter than the last. This is not wannabe BDSM, and it is gritty, emotional, and delicious.

Don't Waste Your Time
By Kimberly Filkins
This book is truly awful. If you want a well-researched, well-written biography this is not the one to get. It's filled with typos, misspellings, and terrible sentence structure. It looked like a first draft. Seriously, how did this get published? The bibliography consists of IMDB, Wikipedia, and Youtube. If you've seen the films, this book doesn't tell you anything you didn't already know. And if you haven't, I wouldn't trust this book as it lists Olivia Wilde as having played Ms. Cross in Rushmore. It was actually Olivia Williams. And Bill Murray did not play Henry in The Royal Tenenbaums. He played Margot's husband, Raleigh St. Clair. My advice, steer clear of this one.

Not enough book for your buck
By Jon Cox
Absolutely terrible. This book could have really been around 20 pages long. About every other page is blank. On top of that it is full of typos and incorrect facts. It briefly describes the movies and that's pretty much it. Just watch the movies. It has a few "fun facts" that are interesting but that's about it. Seriously, siting Wikipedia is breaking rule number one of journalism. I think at one time this was just a student's final for a writing class, and if that's so... F!

I wanted to get a gift for my brother-in-law, who is a big fan of Wes Anderson, but this was disappointing. Luckily I like books so I flipped through this one before giving it to him. It reads like a childrens book. Or the clifnotes to a really good book. There was lots of space and the print is really big. It did not feel well put together. I bought the other one "The Wes Anderson Collection in Hardcover" and it is 100 times better. Full color photos. Actual writing. Perfect as a gift.

Goodbye, Columbus : And Five Short Stories (Vintage International), by Philip Roth

Roth's award-winning first book instantly established its author's reputation as a writer of explosive wit, merciless insight, and a fierce compassion for even the most self-deluding of his characters.

Goodbye, Columbus is the story of Neil Klugman and pretty, spirited Brenda Patimkin, he of poor Newark, she of suburban Short Hills, who meet one summer break and dive into an affair that is as much about social class and suspicion as it is about love. The novella is accompanied by five short stories that range in tone from the iconoclastic to the astonishingly tender and that illuminate the subterranean conflicts between parents and children and friends and neighbors in the American Jewish diaspora.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1974's My Life as A Man Roth examines how a writer revises his reality, compiling two stories "by" one Peter Tarnopol and a third in which Tarnopol is the fictional protagonist. Vintage will simultaneously reissue Goodbye, Columbus , Roth's National Book Award-winning first novel, together in a new edition with five short stories.

From Library Journal
This release by the 1960 National Book Award winner will acquaint listeners with the world of American Jews in the 1950s and to Roths wit and insight into the problems accompanying assimilation. A widely respected American writer, Roth is the author of 22 books, including American Pastoral (Audio Reviews, LJ 10/1/97) and I Married a Communist (Houghton, 1998). Goodbye, Columbus features Neil Klugman, a young man from Newark living with his aunt, and Brenda Patimkin, an archetypal Jewish American Princess, whose summer romance illustrates the tension between old world values and the new suburb-based culture. Provocative and entertaining, the other stories tell of likable characters, mostly men, who embrace their Jewishness yet must face conflicts in family and community. Although written nearly 40 years ago, these stories illustrate truths about America and its relationship with Jews that remain relevant today. The readers, who include actors Theodore Bikel and Elliott Gould, are all excellent, capturing the particular characteristics of Jewish American speech. Highly recommended for all libraries.Nancy R. Goodbye, Columbus
By Damian Kelleher
Goodbye, Columbus is a coming of age story, a summer romance between a poor boy and a wealthy girl. Many themes that were to show up in much more detail in his later works are presented in embryonic form in this novella, his first major work. Being Jewish in America, sex, class boundaries, the American Way: All Roth subjects, all handled with intelligence and compassion.

Neil is the typical poor Jewish boy enamoured with Brenda, the classy, self-assured, rich girl. He shows a rare spark of confidence when he calls her for a date after first meeting her at a swimming pool, when she accepts and they meet, he finds that he really doesn't know what to do from there. But, they bumble through the beginnings of a relationship, mutually attracted physically, diametrically opposed socially. Neil has a few 'poor' ideas and thoughts that Brenda cannot relate to, while she accepts such luxuries as a maid or 'getting her nose fixed' with such ease and complacency that we - and Neil - are amazed. Over the summer, their relationship develops further, with the typical ups and downs of love colouring the journey.

Neil is the 'I' character of the story, and it is through his point of view that we watch the story unfold. However, even though the story is in first person, there is never much of his personality revealed through contemplative thought or reflection. Instead, we learn who he is from the way he interacts with Brenda and others, and from the way he studies the events in which he is involved. By the end of the novella, we (mostly) understand his motives and ideas, and though, admittedly, it is a little difficult to imagine Neil existing outside the scope of the novel, that actually plays into the theme of the story. Neil is searching for meaning, for a reason to keep on existing, and he considers that in Brenda, he has found it. Whether this is true or not becomes a large focus in the novel, particularly when, later on, she repeatedly reveals to him that she is in fact her own person, with her own ideas, and that sometimes they won't mesh with his.

Brenda, on the other hand, remains a complete mystery to both the reader and Neil. Because we are never allowed to see her thoughts, and because her and Neil have such a different social background, she is someone who we try to understand, but inevitably fail. At times, Neil will say or do something and she will become upset, or tender, or both, and Neil will be so confused that he simply accepts. This can be frustrating for the reader, because Brenda is an appealing character, and it would be nice for him to have the gumption to search deeper within her for meaning and thought, but unfortunately he rarely does. Interestingly, this doesn't come off so much as a failing on Roth's part as an author, but Neil's as a character.

As stated above, the typical themes and ideas that Roth was to develop more fully in his later works are present here. There is the same easy insight into the mundane reality of life, and the same simple joy in, say, eating a piece of fruit or swimming in a pool. Goodbye, Columbus is a story that focuses on one single idea, that being the summer romance between two people that could not have a relationship in any other situation, and it explores it in a remarkably fulfilling way. Admittedly, the very Jewish quality of the writing and ideas may not be as identifiable for a non-Jewish person, but speaking as a man of no faith, I didn't find it to be all that much of a problem. Also, the casual racism towards African-Americans may be off-putting, but again, it didn't upset the flow of the novel.

To conclude, what Roth has done here is to introduce himself as an author, and for a twenty-six year old, it is an impressive introduction. Having read other works of his, I would recommend it as a good starting point. If you like Goodbye, Columbus - and I am quite certain everyone would - then you will love his later works. If not, not. And at only 140 pages, it is worth everyone's time to check out.

The Cherry Orchard, by Anton Chekhov

Chekhov’s last play, The Cherry Orchard is a powerful work that addresses many of the socioeconomic developments in Russia at the turn of the century. Telling the story of an aristocratic Russian family that must sell its prized estate to a former serf, The Cherry Orchard details the collapse of the Russian aristocracy and the senseless materialism of the rising bourgeoisie. Serving to influence playwrights such as George Bernard Shaw and Arthur Miller, The Cherry Orchard remains one of Chekhov’s most celebrated works.

A heartbreak and a smile
By William Krischke
As I read this play, my family is in the process of moving a thousand miles away from the farm where I grew up. Though I am so far away from the Russian culture and time of this play, the themes of place, tradition, and inevitable change resonated inside of me, and I am grateful to Chekhov for the way he has handled them.
The Cherry Orchard is a play about change, and the symbolism is pretty easy to recognize. What makes it stand apart, I think, from a thousand other plays on the same theme is its wonderful sense of comedy, of smiling sadness. Chekhov all his life insisted it was a comedy. As the Cherry Orchard slips away from the Ranevskys, they seem to smile at its going. As they are unable to change their habits -- still lending money they don't have, still spending extravagantly -- they quietly laugh at their own foolishness. The change comes, and they leave, heartbroken -- but embracing the change at the same time, only feebling struggling against it. One feels saddest, in the end, for Lopakhin, the new owner of the Cherry Orchard. He seems to believe he has bought happiness and friends, but is quickly discovering the emptiness of money and possessions, as no one wants to borrow from him, and no one seems to pay him much heed at all.
Chekhov paints with a fine brush, and I appreciate that. There is no thunderstorming, no ranting and raving in this work. There is a fine and subtle, sad and comedic portrayal of a family and a place encountering change. It is a heartbreak with a smile.
The translation, though the only one I've read, seems good. It is easy to follow and rich in simple feeling.
if you'd like to discuss this play with me, or recommend something i might enjoy, or just chat, e-mail me at williekrischke@hotmail.com.

Timeless
By Barry D. Smith
The Cherry Orchard was me first experience with Chekhov, and I was surprised at the depth in this 49 page play. By no means would I considered myself a "literary expert," but this was very readable and you can pull a lot of the deeper meanings and its context in Russian history by yourself. I was confused at a couple people who write that the simply couldn't understand it and it put them to sleep! It's not THAT tough! If I could understand and appreciate it, almost anyone can!
What I like most about Chekhov is that he doesn't simplify his characters. He's a realist in this sense. Lopahkin and Trophimof each have admirable and detestable characteristics, just like you and I. While it may be set in the tumultuous period prior to the Russian revolution, the ideas and the discussions this play provokes are timeless.
Highly recommended!

Kindle edition NOT the Tom Stoppard translation!
By Matthew
I bought the Kindle edition of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard under the impression that it was the translation done by English playwright Tom Stoppard as the authorship of the item clearly states in Amazon's description. However, upon examining the title page of the Kindle book I was shocked to see someone else listed as the translator. I have not read this translation and therefore cannot review it, but I am extremely disappointed that Amazon is misrepresenting this item and they need to dix it!

Practical guide that can teach you real-world hacking and penetration testing skills
By Ben Rothke
I’ve enjoyed Kevin Beaver’s Hacking for Dummies series for over a decade. The first edition came out in 2004 and I reviewed the 4th edition here. Now in its 5th edition, the books 22 chapters progress from the basics of security to the hardening of an operating system, to the hacking of Web applications and more.

The new edition covers Windows 10 and Linux, and includes a number of more recently developed hacking tools.

For those looking for a high-level theoretical approach to network defense, look elsewhere. This is an in the trenches guide you can use to ensure that your organization's systems and network are secure.

The previous edition came out a little over 3 years ago and much has changed in the world of information security. Like the previous editions, if you are looking for a practical guide that can teach you real-world hacking and penetration testing skills, this updated edition of Hacking for Dummies is an excellent resource.
