Maggie Parke is completing her doctoral degree at the National Institute for Excellence in the Creative Industries at Bangor University, Wales. She has published in the Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds and is the head of development for Elfin Productions. Natalie Wilson pens one of the only academic blogs analyzing Twilight and its cultural impact. She teaches at Cal State San Marcos in the Department of Literature and Writing and in the women's studies program.

Not my cup of tea, loved it anyway

Eight weeks prior to this review, one of my fellow reference librarians received a request via our "Research Consultation Program" (anyone can request an appointment with a librarian for assistance in research). The patron stated they needed "scholarly articles about the Twilight movies and books." We both rolled our eyes and chuckled to each other (in private) then proceeded, in good faith, to help our hapless undergraduate. It's not that topics in popular culture don't receive scholarly treatment, but given that Stephenie Meyer's series was written so recently, 2005 to 2008, and the film versions didn't start until 2008 and won't be complete until late 2012, we weren't confident we'd find much. To our surprise, we did find a couple of critical analyses, mostly in the form of reviews. Fast forward to today.

Maggie Parke and Natalie Wilson have done a fine job of filling the void in scholarly and critical analysis of many things Twilight. The essays are divided into three sections. The first covers the pop cultural aspects surrounding Twilight. Reading the five essays herein reminded me of my earlier days, reviewing a fanzine called "The Picardian" which attempted to cover, and deconstruct, all things Jean Luc Picard (see Star Trek: The Next Generation).

The thrust of the second five essays falls under traditional literary criticism and analysis. Comparisons with Wuthering Heights and modern teen fiction are well written and, dare I say it? INTERESTING!

The final five essays focus on the social and anthropological aspects of the Twilight universe. Discussions of "heteronormative patriarchy" stand along side musing about the "Noble Savage" and "Genesis, Gender, and Gynocide."

This book should be a no brainer purchase for public libraries, and academic libraries that can back down from snobbery ("But, but, but, it's just about TWILIGHT, dang it!") could also benefit from our experience that there will be a demand for this book (and I know that anecdote is not evidence).

Parents could consider purchasing this for their Fans of Twilight offspring. Think of this work as a stealthy introduction to a younger generation about the joys of quality critical analysis, deconstruction, and the analysis of pop culture.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars because, despite NOT being a fan of the Twilight books or movies, I loved this collection.

Thrilling, gripping adventure story, a must read

I stumbled across this book randomly in a very outdated ship's library where most of the books were from the 1960's-70's. And I'm glad I did.

For anyone interested in travel and adventure this book is immediately interesting, gripping you right from the start. The greatest thing about this book, in addition to the adventures, is the author's (also the translator's) writing style. The author speaks so matter-of-factly and with a touch of dry humor about all these fantastic adventures that it makes the reader that more amazed by them when you think about what is really happening. Though it might be a cliche, the author makes you feel you are right there with them, not just a spectator but almost an active participant.

I have since bought this book myself and read it twice, it is a quick read. In fact I left the old copy where I found it on the chance that someone else will stumble across it as well, and enjoy it as much as I have.

The author himself is quite a character, sort of a French academic Indiana Jones as another reviewer put it, and has written another book that I plan to read. Highly recommended!

You won't believe this story.............

I read Panjamon in the sixties. I had trouble finding it on the internet. Perhaps one adventure like this is enough for one lifetime.

Lost in the Borneo interior during the 60's, the author comes across some very different looking natives; are they friendly?, well, sort of, they shoot him with a paralyzing, non-deadly, dart, then haul him back to the tribe for 3 years.

A multitude of perils and adventures ensue including a marriage ritual requiring being put naked into a hole filled with fire ants then immediately being banished to the forest to survive alone, cold, and infected, with no cell phone.

If you're an adventure and travel reader, check this out.

It's a remarkable tale and it's incredible that the author survived.

Unique Insights into the Bornean Rain Forest

This is one of the very rare books offering insight into the life of indigenous people before civilization even touched them. The Kajan and Iban peoples of Borneo were still living as hunters at stone age level in the impenetrable forests of Borneo when the author visited both tribes and spent considerable time in an Iban village of headhunters. He went through the initialization rituals and married an Iban woman, learned to hunt by blowpipe and appreciate the rich and lighthearted life of the primitive.
This book offers views that deeply affected my outlook on our species. Still, the author is a zoologist and had no anthropologist ambitions whatsoever to begin with. I rate it equal to Jean Liedloffs books. Too bad it is out of print, possibly because it was put in the "travel and adventure" section.

The Best Book in the Series

This is simply one of the best books of this series. Terian Lepos has always been one of the most complex characters of this story, and one whom I have had the most affection for. He is flawed in so many ways, but underlying it all has been the desire to live in the light, despite being a dark knight.

This book, a side story, so to speak, between the last Sanctuary book and the next one, Warlord, tells of the battle for the sovereignty of Saekaj Sovar. We already knew, from the last book, that Terian becomes the new sovereign, but have been given no details until now.

The primary characters in this book are Terian, J'anda and Aisling. Curatio plays a role, as does Cyrus and Vara, and also, surprisingly enough, Alaric. Other Sanctuary characters also feature from time to time. But, the story belongs to Terian. He emerges from it a white knight, and takes the reins of power in Saekaj Sovar.

This book is the most exciting, the most complicated emotionally, and the most interesting of all of them. We get to know these three people thoroughly, finally. We understand now why Alaric had such faith in Terian, when everyone else saw only betrayal. We understand how the power structure in Saekaj Sovar worked, and who were the main power wielders. We also get to see the end of the story of Aisling and Norenn.

The Epilogue, in typical Crane fashion, has a stunning revelation. It is something that hasn't been foreshadowed in any way, or hinted at. I can't wait to see how it will play into the next book, if it does at all.

I selfishly hope that Warlord will not be the final book in the series. I love these books. I could read another 20 of them. Unfortunately, Crane doesn't write all that fast, and he is concentrating his attention on another series, which is more popular. Why, I don't know.

Even though this book is called Book 5.5 of the series, and considered a side project, don't miss it. You'll be cheating yourself out of important action and information if you do. I think it's the best of the series.

Simply glorious. I have been waiting with bated breath since Master, and am very pleased with Fated in Darkness. I can say that this certainly does clear up quite a few things, things which I didn't expect at all, specifically to do with Terian...
As always, Crane has done a brilliant job with his latest Sanctuary book, and I can barely wait for Warlord.
