Gorgeous book

This book is a catalogue of the Fashioning Fashion historical clothing exhibit at LACMA [Los Angeles County Museum of Art]. Not only is the book huge with equally large, well-lit and clear color photos of breathtaking garments, but it expands upon the exhibit with additional photos and page after page of text. A brilliant book and must-have for anyone remotely interested in historical clothing or costume. Definitely worth the money, it is heavy and the photos are full-page. Excellent layout, well written and researched. Fantastic. While women's costumes always outnumber the men's in exhibits [and this is no exception], there are actually a good number of men's outfits, and what was chosen for display is.. the best. White suede riding breeches, not a mark on them. A silk Regency era top hat with a tiny flared brim. An 18th century silk satin suit embroidered in pink! Genius.

That said, the book is a poor mimic of the actual clothing. While this is one of the best costume books I have ever owned, it completely pales in comparison to the actual exhibit. I wouldn't have known how much better the clothes looked in person if I hadn't been to the actual exhibit. This is no slur upon the book-- there's just really no way to capture everything without seeing it yourself. All of the pieces shown are in absolutely mint condition, and they are clearly displayed up close, some even with a mirror behind the mannequin so you can see the back. A large 18th century embroidered satin piece is put under glass and hung on the wall, so you can see every perfect stitch, millimeters from your eyes.

It is the best costume exhibit I have seen thus far, and probably one of the best I will ever see. It is quite large, and there are no "filler" items. I don't even have a favorite piece because I can't possibly choose between them. Unbelievable. If you are anywhere near Los Angeles, go see this exhibit! It runs through March 6.

This book is outstanding! It's very informative and well-written, but of course the best part is all the great pictures of gorgeous clothing! I'd highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in historical fashion.

Lavish details, lots of full shots

One of the best things about this beautiful book is that it does not stint on the extreme close up details such as methods of quality embroidery and stitching, yet it gives a balanced comparison between the close ups and the full shots on manikins so you can understand how they were used in context. I have both of the V&A fashion in detail books, which are so beautiful but one wishes one could see the entire finished product as well; this book does that. Covering the types of textiles used traditionally, tailoring, and even showing comparisons of how antique styles directly inspire and influence modern fashion (but sparingly fortunately), this book really is a nice comprehensive overview of European fashion from the mid 1700s to the early 1900s. The photographer did a fantastic job!

Excellent French Language book for Teachers and Students

As a French tutor and French native, I love this book. It teaches all aspects of the French language: Conversation, Grammar, Vocabulary and includes excellent Exercises (with answers in the back).
I recommend it highly to everyone, both beginners and those wanting to perfect his or her skills.

I love French.

I love this book. It is easy to read and it is easy to carry. I use it as a reference book because I have never taken French before. Sometimes when I am unable to understand, the authors' explanations are simple and easy to read. I really like the book. I also have the Spanish one, and I like it too.

Like wringing a sponge and soaking in the French

Hello. I have had this book for a few months now. I would like to say that it has been a big help. First of all, I'm a junior in high school who's taking French and desperately needed a study guide. Well this was it. What I love about this is all the exercises that it comes with. Every chapter has around 12 sections of exercises where you get to practice what you have acquired the few pages before. Thanks to this book (and summer tutoring), I have learned enough French that I was able to skip second year of French at my school.

Some important notes:
If you don't know anything about the French language, you'll find this book a hard one (Even though it's a Step-by-Step self study guide). For one thing, there is not a book in the world that can ever teach you the pronunciation needed. As for me, I had my French teacher give me a whole summer of French tutoring for free. That really helped with correct enunciation. I would recommend to the absolute beginner (especially those who are monolingual) to get in contact with mentor to help explain the difficult part of prounounciation. As you may or may not know, 80% of French words have mute endings that might or might not get pronounced depending on the next syllable. You really want someone to guide you if you're a beginner. Also, before you dive into this book, understand these few concepts:

(First List)
- Verbal Aspects
- Verbal Tenses
- Verbal Moods (especially the subjunctive)
- Direct Objects
- Indirect Objects
- Antecedent
- Relative clauses
- Verb Valency

If you have a curious mind (like the one I do) Google and learn the following:

(Second List)
- Why does French have grammatical gender?
- Why does every adjective have to agree in number and in gender with the main noun?

You see, by learning the things in the first list, I was better able to grasp the difficult aspects required to speak any language (Pun intended). Believe it or not, verbs are like rocket-science. They are really hard to understand unless you practice them everyday. This book doesn't cover the items in the first list very well. I recommend you look them up before beginning this book.

The second list, you curious minded folks, is not actually going to help you learn any French nor make this book a better read. (Yes, you read that right.) Instead, this list (the 2nd one) will help keep you from getting discouraged of learning French. By knowing and acknowledging the fundamental principles driving Romantic languages, you'll understand why French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and many other languages have abstract nouns with sex (chairs have boobies? doors are chicks now?) that we, English speaking folk, find so foreign yet so enticing. great teaching tool

As a teacher staying home with my toddler, I wanted materials for her that would be fun and educational without her catching on to the fact that she's learning something. This fits the bill...and each page has a little reminder to parents of what their expectations should be, so kids don't get frustrated. I suggest getting a few different books together and just doing a few out of each. Mix it up!

This must be the worst product Kumon sells.... I'm afraid to order any more of their products to find out. It's a tiny book, definitely not worth the $6 they ask for it. I have purchased better quality sticker books at the dollar store. Some pages have only one sticker, or cut out, for the page. All the stickers are located at the beginning of the book in the first 2 pages; for 8 pages of sticker pasting. The rest of the pages are for cut and paste. They expect you to cut out a portion of each page to paste on the rest of the page.... which I could understand IF cutting out the bottom portion of the page were what they want you to do.... but on some pages they expect you to cut out an odd shaped portion of the page... just look at the photos attached to see what I am talking about. It is a cheap quality book... the paper itself is great quality, but definitely not the setup. The pages are not perforated either... so you must rip them out. Definitely not worth $6.

Fun but parent needs to cut the pieces out

Sticker part is not that many pages. Most pages, a parent need to cut the pieces (small small pieces) which a toddler will paste with a glue. My so still enjoys it a lot especially using the glue but it's a bit tedious work to have to cut the pieces before he can paste them. Still bought other versions of the sticker and paste book because he loved it so much.

Nothing but good things to say about the product and seller. The product came used and for the price I got it at, it was a steal. The pages may be a little bent but there is no writing or highlighting in the book and I am amazed at what I got for the price. The package arrived way earlier than expected and when I had questions the seller got back to me within a few hours. Best buy I've made in a long time.

refreshing - fills a glaring void

for what it is, this text is actually quite good. so let's be clear. it is NOT intended for a high school chemistry course, and it is NOT intended for any sort of science major. but not everyone taking a chemistry course is a chemistry major or even a science major. there's this little thing that all colleges and universities have, usually called something like a "distribution of studies" requirement, which demands that all students take a minimum number of credits in areas far from their major, in the hope that their education be more well-rounded. that is the type of course for which this text is intended; a terminal intro college course, and for THAT purpose, it is very well conceived and very well executed.

basic arithmetic skills and especially problem-solving skills are shockingly bad, even among the science majors in college today. and having taught a "chemistry for poets" course more than once, i can say with some authority that the students typically enrolled in such a class (english, business, philosophy, psych majors, etc) are absolutely incapable of solving problems which require any arithmetic skills above finger-counting. but chemistry, like any science, is not just about number crunching. it is, at its heart, conceptual. and it is not necessary to torture non-science majors with useless and pointless exercises in algebra in order to explain the concepts that underlie those computations. in fact, it is a relief to find a text that is refreshingly devoid of the minutiae of chemistry, and instead focused upon the clarity and intuitiveness of the explanations of physical and chemical phenomena. descriptive chemistry. three cheers to the author for filling a glaring need.

the only negative comment i would make is one that i would apply to virtually every other text i have seen in the past 30 years, and is directed at the publisher - it is outrageously overpriced. but since higher education is now a profit-driven enterprise rather than a standards driven pursuit, gouging the students (parents) is now common practice, and sadly will remain so for the foreseeable future. this is particularly offensive for the type of course for which this book is intended. in all likelihood, these students will never take another chemistry course, and they will NOT be wanting to keep their text as a future reference book. it's a disposable text, and should be priced accordingly. the good news is that this is the fourth edition, and sane professors may adopt an earlier edition, and allow their students to buy used copies which can be had for under $10.

He also served as technical editor for Microsoft's DOS 5 and DOS 6 manuals. He is currently employed at Metier, an Oracle partner company that provides consulting services in the Los Angeles area.

Excellent book, but title misleading

With all the many Oracle Press books I have been able to review, I have not yet been disappointed by one of them. They have consistently been written clearly, been relevant, and valuable in real-world Oracle development. This book is of course no exception. It is written as a beginning guide to not only Oracle development but as an entry-level text to SQL syntax and concepts as well.

After a good introduction to what a database is, the author begins into a tutorial on basic SQL syntax. In this introductory section, the reader learns how to create tables, write INSERT statements, and then select the data back out via the SELECT statement. The author quickly moves to more advanced techniques, illustrating the use of the WHERE clause, and discusses use of the UPDATE statement.

Practical use of the techniques just discussed will likely be implemented in SQL*Plus, so the author begins a very thorough discussion of this tool. Many of the potential problems a user might experience with SQL*Plus are covered and solutions are provided. I was quite pleased with how extensive this chapter covers the topic of SQL*Plus. It is an excellent introduction to this tool.

The author then begins to discuss more advanced database techniques, including the use of indexes and constraints. Finally, the author begins a discussion of basic PL/SQL syntax. This is really my only problem with the book: the book is called PL/SQL 101, yet only the last chapter is dedicated to discussing the subject. Sure, the proceeding material is necessary to have the framework to discuss PL/SQL. I just think the title is a bit misleading.

So far so good

I bought this book as a compliment to a current course I'm taking on DB systems. Knowing nothing about Oracle and very little about SQL, I've found this book to very informative thus far. Though I'm still reading this book, it is the perfect companion for someone new to Oracle PL/SQL and SQL.
