Bailey argues that this cross-pollination of early modern art became the first truly global visual currency for cultural exchange. Through a sweeping look at Japan, China, Mughul India, and Paraguay, the author focuses on four of the most flourishing artistic encounters and discovers much unrecognized or misunderstood art. Solid Introduction for Private Equity Concepts

Overall, this is a well written and informative introduction to the world of private equity. Granted this was a mandatory textbook for a course in private equity, I found it extremely helpful and still refer back to it at times a year later. The text does a sufficient job at introducing and explaining concepts from The Private Equity Cycle between General Partners and Limited Partners to the structuring of deals and achieving liquidity in a PE setting. While my very accomplished professor, currently a founder and managing partner at his own PE firm, did mention several times throughout the semester that some of the book's explanations were not accurate depictions of the "real-world", he still felt a majority of the concepts were for the most part accurate. It is mostly a conceptual textbook without much in-depth "math" work. If you are looking for a solid introduction to private equity or this is a required textbook for a class, I would recommend going ahead and buying (instead of renting) the book if you are genuinely interested. However, if you are searching for a more in-depth look into more advanced PE modeling or LBO tactics, I would look elsewhere.

About the Author
Carole A. Haswell is a Senior Lecturer in Physics and Astronomy in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, The Open University. She worked on accretion flows around black hole binary star systems until becoming fascinated by the field of exoplanets. Her research work now focuses on Hubble Space Telescope observations of transiting exoplanets.

Great under-grad level textbook

If you are an astronomy or astrophysics major, and want to learn about one of the most studied types of exoplanets, this book is for you. What I like are the concept questions in each section. There's no "chapter" exercises, but the questions given throughout each section help to reinforce the key concepts.

Great for a Dialogue Between You and Your Child!

I bought this from Amazon and recieved it yesterday when my 4 year old was in preschool. As I skimmed the book I thought to myself that it looked really good but was probably too advanced for her. I was wrong about that. She loved it.

The book discusses 10 ways to soar through life:
1. You're great--no matter what!
2. Persistance pays off!
3. Welcome to the Unknown
4. You have a choice
5. Farewell to worry
6. Peace begins with you
7. Enjoy the Here-and-now
8. Healthy me!
9. Creativity is the key!
10. What can you give.

These principles are each explained on one side of the page. On the other side a situational example of how a child applied it in his or her own way.

The thing my child and I liked most about the book was the section at the end where it asks questions about how the child has or could use each of the 10 principles. I was a bit amazed and delighted by what my daughter shared with me--thing I didn't know about her her life away from me. Her eyes really lit up during this part and she talked a mile a minute.

I'm very pleased with the book written by Wayne Dyer and Kristina Tracy. I have been a fan of Dyer's CD's (based on his books) for some time now which are geared to adults. The illustrations by Stacy Heller Budnick are very eye appealing and cheerful.

I love these positive messages that I can share with my daughter as she grows up and I want to add the first book Dyer wrote for children to her library. Now if only Deepak Chopra would write a few children's books--I'd love that too.

Really, Really Good!

My eight year old daughter suggested the title for this review. We recieved this book as a gift and have so enjoyed reading it together. We have the first book as well...Incredible You. Unstoppable Me is as good, if not better, than the first. My favorite part of both books is the question section at the end. It's a great vehicle for discussion. This book conveys a lovely, positive message for kids and adults alike, and would also be a great teaching tool for teachers of preschool through early elementary.

This is an amazing book. It helps to convey some very necessary messages to our young friends in very easy to understand ways. You can't beat the cute illustrations either! I would tell anyone who wants to help support our next generation to be more in touch with themselves and with the universe to buy this book. WOW!

Excellent condensed version of Metaxas's main book that captures the key concepts and adds additional teen-friendly content

I was a little skeptical when I saw that a student edition of the book was coming out--it's not uncommon for book publishers to take a successful book and churn out special edition after special edition to squeeze as much profit as they can out of it. But when I saw that Metaxas himself had written it, I had to take a look.

As I expected, this edition is exceptional. It goes way beyond being a "Reader's Digest condensed version", it captures the most important facts and stories in Bonhoeffer's life from the main book using language and a narrative that is understandable by students without talking down to them. While the publisher isn't clear about the age range of who should be reading this, personally I'd say anywhere from grade 6 to grade 9; anything after that and they probably could be reading the regular edition.

Something else I appreciate are the call-out boxes--unlike in other books they're not just pedantic filler but really interesting definitions and facts that are relevant to the text; things like the lyrics of Luther's "A Mighty Fortress is Our God", juxtaposed with a passage describing how the faithful in Germany defiantly sang the hymn as bishop Ludwig Muller started to impose Nazi rules into the German church. Another call-out box describes grocery prices in 1923 in the USA compared to Germany after Versailles.

I also appreciate the questions at the end of each chapter. They're not just there to test reading comprehension, but to inspire thought, introspection, and ultimately life application on what was just read. One of the questions, for example, asks students, "Niemoller said, 'No more are we ready to keep silent at man's [request] when God commands us to speak.' Have you ever kept silent about something you knew was wrong?"

While this book was designed for students, I have to admit that as a guy in my 40s I also read it cover to cover. I think this says something about Metaxas and his ability to reach any audience (speaking of which, if you're not listening to Metaxas's radio show @ www.metaxastalk.com, you're missing out!). With so many other books designed for tweens and teens speaking down to them, this one actually gives them the credit they deserve, and goes beyond a history book to one that can help them think through the life of Bonhoeffer and apply it to their daily lives. And the lessons from Bonhoeffer are timely, teaching everything from how to stand up for your faith in a world that is increasingly hostile to it; how to uphold the truth even if it's not the popular thing to do; and how to open your eyes and see the signs of the times clearly when so many around have tunnel vision or choose to stick their heads in the sand. This should be required reading by every young person.

"How can I be good? " and "How can I do something good

Instead they must ask the wholly other, completely different question: "what is the will of God?" . . . All things appear as in a [warped] mirror if they are not seen and recognized in God. (179)

Several years ago Eric Metaxas published the bestseller Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. The book was considerably large which made the success puzzlingly. Prior to its publication, most could not pronounce Bonhoeffer, let alone tell his story. The opposite can be said now.

Due to the books success, Thomas Nelson has released a student edition of book entitled Bonhoeffer Student Edition: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. Though I am a fan of the German theologian, I must admit my hesitancy of picking it up. Like most "student edition" books, I assumed it would have been the same book just shorter. Yet it is anything but that.

When it comes to reading biographies, it has been my experience to start off with a simple book on someone who know very little about before digging into the more detailed accounts. Though I was familiar with Bonhoeffer's story, I had not invested in a full biography of the man. Thus when I read Metaxas's larger work, I was a bit overwhelmed.

For those new to Bonhoeffer, this is the a helpful book to invest in. It is a much simply book to read adn follow. Almost every page has side bars which guide the reader even further in the narrative. Most of the names and events are in bold which are further explored in the back. Given that most of the names are German, this is helpful to every American reader unfamiliar with the territory.

Ultimately, I would highly recommend this book to any student of history and Bonhoeffer. Metaxas has once again published a book on the man worth your investment.

Great book for students who are looking to change the world

Bonhoeffer Student Edition: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy is a great book that would impact students and adults. I love how Eric Metaxas modified this book for students. His book, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, is a must read for pastors, and adults. I doubt that students in your youth ministry would be willing to pick up a 650 page book just because you said it was good.

This is a book that I want to introduce to my student leaders next year. It is written in an accessible way, that anyone could get an idea of who Dietrich Bonhoeffer was, and what he stood for.

Initially, I was skeptical about a student edition of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. I have seen other student edition of other Christian books, and they usually do a terrible job of writing for students. The book Bonhoeffer Student Edition: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy is worth giving out. I was really surprised, and thankful that the author did a great job of modifying it for students.

About the Author
Dr. Donna Wittmer’s Ph.D. is in Child, Family, and Community Studies from Syracuse University where she studied infant and toddler development, behavior, and intervention with Dr. Alice Honig and Dr. Ron Lally (now the creator and coordinator of PITC). Donna Wittmer was a professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center for 17 years from 1990-2007. She has taught a variety of courses for students obtaining their MA in Early Childhood Education and a license to teach in Early Childhood Special Education (ages 0-5) and she coordinated the program for eight years. Prior to becoming a professor in Colorado, she taught behavioral pediatrics at the Health Sciences Center in Syracuse for eight years. She also was the coordinator and provided assessment and intervention services, on a grant from New York State, for five years on the Onondaga Nation for children (birth to six) and their families.

She and Sandra Petersen wrote the chapter “Programs for Infants and Toddlers” for S. Feeney, A. Galper, & C. Seefeldt’s book Continuing Issues in Early Childhood Education, Third Edition (Merrill, 2008). She is the author of Focusing on Peers in the Early Years: The Importance of Relationships (In Press, ZERO TO THREE, 2008), and she and Sandra Petersen have written Endless Opportunities for Infant and Toddler Curriculum-A Relationship-Based Approach (Merrill/Pearson, 2009), a companion book to Infant and Toddler Development and Responsive Program Planning . Both Donna Wittmer and Sandra Petersen are authors on The Young Child, 5th Edition with M. Puckett & J. Black (Merrill/Pearson, 2008).

Sandy Petersen works for the Early Head Start National Resource Center at ZERO TO THREE: The National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families. She recently worked on the new publication Early Learning Guidelines for Infants and Toddlers: Recommendations for States and the soon to be released second edition of Caring for Infants and Toddlers in Groups: Developmentally Appropriate Practice. She created and teaches the special needs workshop for the WestEd Program for Infant Toddler Care. Before joining ZERO TO THREE, she was Coordinator of Training and Technical Assistance for Early Childhood Initiatives at the Colorado Department of Education. She was one of the primary authors of Colorado’s “Building Blocks”, preschool content standards in reading and mathematics, and the Guidelines for the IFSP and Service Coordination.

Ms. Petersen has direct service experience in early intervention, infant-parent psychotherapy, and childcare. She has a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology and completed doctoral coursework in Early Childhood Special Education at the University of California – Berkeley.

Infant and Toddler Development and Responsive Program Planning and PITC

The authors have both taught for PITC’s national faculty. Their text embraces and captures the PITC language and philosophy and incorporates suggestions for use of the PITC videos throughout a course. Both Sandy Petersen and Donna Wittmer are fellows of ZERO-THREE and have written articles for the ZERO to THREE journal. They have presented at national conferences numerous times. During their fellowship years, they studied with Berry Brazelton, Stanley Greenspan, Jeree Pawl, and Dolores Norton.

The authors have been on the faculty of the Colorado Department of Education’s Infant and Toddler Expanding Quality Initiative (EQI) for approximately eight years. The model is a trainer of trainer’s model. The faculty of the EQI has taught over 100 Colorado community teachers/coaches to use a 48 clock-hour course developed by the faculty to train 3000 infant/toddler caregivers to provide responsive and relationship-based care to infants and toddlers. Donna Wittmer, with Sandy Petersen and other faculty members, has created the RELATE—A Self-Reflection and Coaching Tool for Relationship-Based Practice that is used by the community teachers to coach the infant/toddler caregivers.
