What it means to be Celtic

The Celts have had a long and complex journey, both through history and myth, and this entry in the excellent Very Short Introduction series is a great place to start tracing that journey. Some historians question whether 'Celtic' is even a meaningful or useful term. Is it a modern invention? Who were, or are, these people or peoples we call 'Celts'? Cunliffe warns at the outset that finding reliable answers will not be easy, then proceeds to make it as easy as possible.

He views the subject from various angles - linguistic, archeological, Classical (the Roman and Greek accounts), ethnological - and gradually builds a coherent picture. His bias reflects the current orthodoxy that cultural influence spreads without the mass migrations that used to be assumed -- ideas and customs spread, not necessarily people. He encourages us to take a view from the Atlantic, and see the Celts as European peoples who traded along that seaboard. Some readers might wish for more detailed maps -- the author or publisher seems to assume that you will know which rivers are the Marne, Danube, etc.

This is an authoritative and accurate work, although I did spot one surprising blunder: On page 137, the ceremony of All Souls is described as taking place on October 31, preceding All Saints. In fact it follows All Saints, on November 2.

Cunliffe's prose is very readable, except that he has a fondness for litotes ("It is not unreasonable to suppose..." "It is not unlikely that..."). This can get not unirritating after a while.

A great deal of misinformation surrounds Celticism. It has become a tool for propagandists and nationalists. There is a certain amount of healthy debunking in this book, but the Celts emerge alive and well. Before I read it, I thought I was of Celtic descent on my mother's side. After reading it, I still do, but now I have some idea of what that means. If you want to know about the Celts, then you need to choose your sources with care, because - as Cunliffe hints - there are many 'lunatic fringe' publications out there. This is a safe place to start.

Exceptional !

For someone who wants a quick and dirty introduction yet up to date book on the ancient Celts I cannot recommend a better book. Although it is quite a short book it is highly superior to books havigng the three times the number of pages this book contains.

Although one may sometimes shy away from short books on complex topics like the Celts take heart for by placing yourself in the hands of Barry Cunliffe you are putting yourself in the hands of a master.

A winner!

Based on scholarship - but...

Finally, an introduction to the Celts based on scholarship and not wishful thinking. Popular books make the Celts out to be either the greatest heroes or the worst villains of Europe. This intro relies on archeology, linguistics (philology) and historical sources to tease out who the Celts were (and even IF they were). Origins, culture, migrations, art, and movements are covered. Modern treatment of the Celts is also covered, and how a new mythology has grown up around them. This overview provides a departure point for interested students to begin their studies with some solid grounding.

The reason for 4 stars vs 5 is the lack of comment on genetic studies. The author is clearly aware of research in this field but makes no real mention of it. For example, I look at a distribution map of haplogroup R1b and I see it apparently mirroring the present day distribution of "Celts". But I also recognize my inexpert tendency to draw these conclusions may not be scientifically warrantied. I would love to have read the author's comments on genetic investigations, and recommendations for further study. Genetic studies have something to offer, but how does it overlap the other disciplines?

Otherwise, great little book. Highly recommended.

But the most original and intriguing ideas in this book are Sanders's thoughts about words and their meanings, as when he suggests that for a season we make explicit the meaning of consumers by replacing it with devourers, or that wilderness is a Sabbath of space rather than time, and we need both kinds of Sabbath because Earth could use a respite from our demands. A Conservationist Manifesto envisions a path toward a materially simpler and spiritually richer way of life. At present, merchants and mass media, politicians and pundits, agree in defining us as consumers, as if the purpose of life were to devour the world rather than to savor and preserve it. However appealing consumerism may be to our egos, and however profitable it may be for business, it is ruinous for our planet, our communities, and our souls. What I propose instead is that we imagine ourselves as conservers, as stewards of the earth's bounty and beauty.

We need to embrace a conservation ethic if we are to address such threats as the disruption of global climate, the tattering of the ozone layer, the clear-cutting of forests, the poisoning of lakes by acid rain, the collapse of ocean fisheries, the extinction of species, the looming shortages of oil and fresh water, and the spread of famine and epidemic disease.

How might we shift to a more durable and compassionate way of life? What models do we have for a culture of conservation? What changes in values and behavior would be required to bring it about? Where can we see it emerging in practice?

This book seeks answers to those questions. Ranging geographically from my home ground in southern Indiana to the Mount St. Helens volcano and Alaska's Glacier Bay and Minnesota's Boundary Waters Wilderness, and ranging culturally from the Bible to billboards, it maps the practical and ecological grounds for a conservation ethic. The roots of conservation go deep in America, back through such visionaries as Rachel Carson, Aldo Leopold, John Muir, and Henry David Thoreau; back through the frugal habits of the Depression and wartime rationing, through agrarian thrift and frontier ingenuity and the prudent advice of Poor Richard's Almanack; back through Quakers and Puritans, with their emphasis on simplicity; and even farther back to the indigenous people who inhabited this continent before it was called America. Drawing on this heritage, I seek to show that the practice of conservation is our wisest and surest way of caring for our neighbors, for this marvelous planet, and for future generations. --SRS

Very Thought provocative

I was in Bloomington at a bookstore and a friend recommended it to me during a weekend of camping at a near by state park. Very beautiful writing style, evocative, but not wordy. The topic is needed and Prof. Sanders adds another powerful voice to the argument for finding an alternative to mindless devourism.

A Call to Simplify Our Lives for a More Sustainable Existence

I am always interested in what people have to share about reducing our personal and collective environmental footprints especially in such a mad dog material consuming society as we have in most western countries and I was quite impressed with Scott Sanders' take on this. Sanders is Professor of English at Indiana U of Bloomington and writes/teaches quite extensively on conservation utilizing the lives of such thinkers as Henry David Thoreau, et al. to impress simplifying our existence by walking the walk. Sanders relates how he and his wife have settled into a life of community involvement by shopping locally, growing some of their own food and doing without much of the gadget trappings of the consumerist society. I was impressed by Sanders' explanation of expanding a frugal yet satisfying existence beyond himself to the community- "sustainable arks" and time is of the essence because of the "exponential" growth and decay of our hyper-consuming, resource depleting and polluting society. Much of Sanders ideas concur with Bill McKibben (End Of Nature, etc.), Gary Snyder (The Practice of the Wild, etc.), Barry Lopez (Arctic Dreams, etc.) and others. A good portion of this fine book covers writing about the ethics of sustainability. Kindred spirits make for expanding sustainable community arks- and the concept is catching on all over the globe.

This is an overall good introduction to Marxism for anthropologists. A limitation is certainly the age of the book as there have been further developments in Marxian anthropology since the 1980s. However, this is still good for understanding the historical and theoretical connections between Marxism as an ideological perspective and sociocultural anthropology as a social science.

About the Author

Dr. Harvey M. Deitel, Chairman of Deitel & Associates, Inc., has 42 years experience in the computing field, including extensive industry and academic experience. Dr. Deitel earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from Boston University. He worked on the pioneering virtual-memory operating-systems projects at IBM and MIT that developed techniques now widely implemented in systems such as UNIX, Linux and Windows XP He has 20 years of college teaching experience and served as the Chairman of the Computer Science Department at Boston College before founding Deitel & Associates, Inc., with his son, Paul J. Deitel. He is the author or co-author of several dozen books and multimedia packages. With translations published in numerous foreign languages, Dr. Deitel's texts have earned international recognition. Dr. Deitel has delivered professional seminars to major corporations, government organizations and various branches of the military.

Paul J. Deitel, CEO and Chief Technical Officer of Deitel & Associates, Inc., is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, where he studied information technology. Through Deitel & Associates, Inc., he has delivered professional seminars to numerous industry and government clients and has lectured on C++ and Java for the Boston Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. He and his father, Dr. Harvey M. Deitel, are the world's best-selling Computer Science textbook authors.

Timothy R. Hoey is a senior at Harvard College pursuing a degree in Computer Science. His coursework includes graduate-level classes in computer graphics, artificial intelligence and network security. Tim gained previous .NET experience as a member of the Information Technology board at The Harvard Crimson.

Cheryl H. Yaeger, Director of Microsoft Software Publications with Deitel & Associates, Inc., graduated from Boston University in three years with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. Great to learn with, bad resources

This book is very good on teaching the basics of C#, and makes you think a bit. The tutorial driven approach enables you actually get experience in every chapter ( at the end of every chapter are good exercises). The problem is that you do not have the answers to the excercises available unless you have the Teacher edition ( this is a classroom book ) , and Deitel will not help you out in this area ( say if you are stuck on an excercise ).There are also 'Programming Challenges' at the end of every chapter that have you use command and concepts that you have yet to learn ( not in all but some ). Other than that, this tutorial is very good, just bad customer service from the authors.

A step forward

I would say that this book would be the step after Deitel's C# How to Program. The concepts in this book are more mathmatic then what is in How to Program.

In essance I found explanations of most of the concepts vague.

If you are just beginning to program, then i would say do the How to Program first and Simply C# after. You should be able to write some decent programs and head into an ADO or ASP .net book from there.

Very good for a beginner

If you are new to C# and has no experience with other C based languages (C, C++, Java), then this book should be the first book you should read. All the rudimentry concepts are explained in detail. The practice problems are marvelous. The author, unlike most programming authors, clearly understands the paramount importance of writing practice programs to learn a new computer language.
If you want to have a heavy duty understanding of ADO, ASP, and OOP, then this book will come up short. But there are other books in the market that will fill that niche.

About the Author

Gordon L. Robertson is a food packaging consultant, author, and trainer, and an adjunct Professor in the School of Land, Crop, and Food Sciences at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Previously, he was Vice President for Environmental & External Affairs for Tetra Pak in their Asia Regional Headquarters for 11 years. Prior to that, he was Foundation Professor of Packaging Technology at Massey University, New Zealand where he taught courses on food packaging for 21 years. Dr. Robertson is also the author of both editions of Food Packaging Principles & Practice (CRC Press, 2006).

Judge the book by the cover....

It is what it says it is... A book about packaging of food products. I bought this book for my job and it didn't have exactly the packaged product that I work on but has been enlightening for what processes happen inside that sealed environment. The works cited by the authors have been invaluable as well. If you need to know about some of the other degradation or considerations for what is happening inside your product, buy this book... Definitely a great start!

This book is current, its chapters are very well organized, both in the order of presentation of topics such as the depth in which they are addressed. I'm taking as a textbook in my discipline Food Packaging.
