With the use of previously unpublished correspondence of Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst, her colleagues and such political leaders as Asquith, Balfour and Lloyd George, the author views the development of ever more extreme and violent forms of militancy not as a series of amusing exploits and incidents but as the carefully calculated political strategy the suffragettes intended it to be. He examines the reasons for the remarkable effectiveness of militant tactics in making women’s enfranchisement a political issue of central importance, and shows why militancy failed to secure this right prior to the outbreak of war in August 1914. He assesses, too, the influence of the vast social and political changes wrought by the war on the ultimate success of the campaign in 1918.

About the Author
Howard Spodek received his B.A. degree from Columbia University (1963), majoring in history and specializing in Columbia’s newly designed program in Asian Studies.  He received his M.A. (1966) and Ph.D. (1972) from the University of Chicago, majoring in history and specializing in India. His first trip to India was on a Fulbright Fellowship, 1964–66, and he has spent a total of some seven years studying and teaching in India. He has also traveled widely throughout the United States, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. He has been a faculty member at Temple University since 1972, appointed Full Professor in 1984. He was awarded Temple’s Great
Teacher award in 1993.

Spodek’s work in world history began in 1988 when he became Academic Director of a comprehensive, innovative program working with teachers in the School District of Philadelphia to improve their knowledge base in world history and facilitate a rewriting of the world history program in the schools. Immediately following this program, he became principal investigator of a program that brought college professors and high school teachers together to reconsider, revise, and, in many cases, initiate the teaching of world history in several of the colleges and universities in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Those projects led directly to the writing of the first edition of the current text (1997).

Howard Spodek has published extensively on urbanization in India, including Urban-Rural Integration in Regional Development (1976); Urban Form and Meaning in South-East Asia (editor, with Doris Srinivasan, 1993); and a wide array of articles, including analyses of working women’s organizations. In addition he wrote and produced the documentary film, Ahmedabad (1983). He has written on his experiences with world history faculty at the college and high school levels in articles in The History Teacher (1992, 1995). He has received funding for his research, writing, teaching, and film from Fulbright, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the American Institute of Indian Studies, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Pretty good, but overpriced

Used this book for a high school freshman World History course. Overall it was good, it contained accurate information and sometimes the material was pretty interesting. Sometimes the page layout could be confusing however, with extra necessary text boxes or picture captions. The overall organization of the book didn't make complete sense in relation to the course of actual world history.
As far as textbooks go, however, this one was pretty interesting!
One last note--why does this book cost so much?? It has a thin cover, isn't very thick, not an excessive amount of pages...I don't understand!

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in other cultures, religious beliefs, and witchcraft.

Good, but not exceptional

I needed this book for an anthropology class. While it is mostly good, I have a few complaints. The first chapter is written with so much academical jargon, I spent half my time figuring out what the words meant and had difficulty grasping the meaning. Thankfully, the following chapters are written in an easier to follow tone. My other complaint has to do with some of the articles being very dated; religions grow and change, I expected the most recent edition to reflect that. Overall, if you need this book for your class, order it. How much you enjoy it really depends on how your professor uses the material.

Donabel is a multi-year Microsoft Data Platform MVP (previously known as SQL Server MVP) and has extensive experience in SQL Server in different areas, such as development, administration, data warehouse, reporting (SSRS), tuning, troubleshooting, XML, CLR, integration with ERPs and CRMs using PowerShell, C#, SSIS, and Power BI.

One of Donabel's passions is teaching and sharing her love for data. She is a Tableau Certified Professional and a Tableau Accredited Trainer, delivering Tableau public and on-site client training. She is also the lead instructor for a number of courses at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), including Applied Database Administration and Design (ADAD) and Applied Data Analytics (ADA) programs. Another low-value-added offering from Packt

I reviewed eight Tableau titles when I started out with Tableau a year ago; since then, there was a second edition of Milligan's "Learning Tableau", now there is "Tableau 10 Business Intelligence Cookbook" by Santos, and "Mastering Tableau" by Baldwin is just around the corner. All three recent books are from Packt. It looks like in a short while, the Tableau segment is going to be dominated by Packt just as the Qlik segment is now.

And you know what - I will continue to recommend good non-Packt books over Packt "book products". In this case, why would you pay $50 for a visually unappealing book that simply walks you through Tableau features, when you can get more by viewing free training videos on the Tableau site? (On tableau.com, select Learning > Free Training Videos). 90%+ of "Tableau 10 Business Intelligence Cookbook" is this straightforward and low-value-added; there are 10 pages or so of more intermediate things - primarily, examples of Tableau expressions - but buying a book for them would be a luxury. The "Cookbook" is too basic to be an intermediate Tableau book, yet as a beginner's book, it is manifestly not fit for purpose. It seems that the titular "cookbook" reference simply provides the author with an excuse to run through examples ("recipes") without bothering about explaining Tableau concepts. Sorry, that's not teaching.

My advice to a Tableau beginner would be: check out "Communicating Data with Tableau", "Tableau for Dummies" and "Tableau for Healthcare". (Do ignore the "healthcare" bit). All three are good, all three have different styles. Pick one or two which suit you. Milligan's book is worth a look, as follow-up, if you can get it cheaply.
