Like its predecessors, The Bastard King (2003) and The Chernagor Pirates (2004), the good-natured, leisurely final installment in Chernenko's Scepter of Mercy trilogy subverts the familiar fantasy tropes with its polite, understated swordplay and minimal, often mundane sorcery. In the kingdom of Avornis, an unseen array of Olympian gods and goddesses has ejected a disgruntled god known as the Banished One. He may also be unseen, but the Banished One is a noisy frequenter of the nightmares of his victims, whom he attempts with mixed success to suborn. The author excels at characterization, in particular of the pair of down-to-earth Avornis kings: Grus, the thinking man's head of warfare, and Lanius, the thinking man's thinker. The two rivals must set aside their differences if they are to regain the scepter that will thwart the Banished One's evil machinations. Some readers may be annoyed not to be let in on Lanius's secret plan to do so, though all should be satisfied with the natural, somewhat bittersweet ending that leaves the door open for further wise and humorous adventures.

While it helps to have read this book's two predecessors, The Bastard King (2003) and The Chernagor Pirates [BKL Mr 1 04], the third book in the series stands on its own without difficulty. The land of Avornis has suffered the enmity of the banished god for a long time. The only weapon that can withstand him is the scepter of mercy. Now Lanius and Grus, the two kings of Avornis, just may be able to recover the scepter. Lanius has a plan that must remain secret from the banished one. Grus must do battle, for the scepter lies in the lands of the hostile Menteshe peoples. Chernenko's world isn't especially distinctive, but his characterization, dialogue, and plotting keep one involved right up to the twist ending. Good basic fantasy storytelling, especially appealing to readers just beginning to explore the genre. Frieda Murray

Conclusion to Turtledove's "Sceptre of Mercy" trilogy

This is the third volume and climax to the "Scepter of Mercy" Trilogy, which consists of the following books:

1) The Bastard King: Scepter of Mercy, Book One
2) The Chernagor Pirates (Scepter of Mercy, Book 2)
3) The Scepter's Return

These books were written by Harry Turtledove using the pen-name Dan Chernenko. Apparently he felt the books were different from his usual subject matter and wanted to see the reaction they would get without his name. The most recent printings actually do have his name on the cover, followed by "writing as Dan Chernenko".

In the previous volumes, unusual political manouvers caused the situation where the Kingdom of Avornis had two kings at the same time: King Lanius, descended from a long line of kings, and King Grus, the son of a guardsman.

The Kingdom of Avornis is beset by enemies on all sides, particularly by barbarians to the south, in territory ruled by the immortal "Banished one" who used to be a God before the other Gods expelled him from heaven. King Lanius has discovered that the Banished one was previously worshipped as Milvago, the principal god. Milvago has stolen from Avornis a powerful talisman for peace, the Scepter of Mercy, which had been given to the Kingdom of Avornis by the Gods who supplanted him.

Strong rivalry remains between Lanius and Grus, but neither wants to tear the country apart in civil war when they have so many dangerous enemies: both would like to get the Scepter of Mercy back from the Banished one. But strife between Lanius and Grus is not the only possible threat to the peace of Avornis: King Grus has been watching his fellow King like a hawk as long as they have shared the throne but neglected to consider a possible threat from even closer to home.

Meanwhile Lanius has thought of an ingenious scheme to recover the Scepter of Mercy ...

Some readers absolutely hated this series, other, of whom I was one, greatly enjoyed it. There books do have both the strengths and weaknesses of many of Harry Turtledove's books. For example, there is a strong storyline, well crafted and believable characters - but he does tend to repeat things an awful lot. I also had some difficulty with the fact that the Banished One seems to have a kind of selective omniscience: if that sounds like an oxymoron it's because what he knows and doesn't not do not quite make sense.

Milvago has enough awareness of what Lanius and Grus are plotting to be able to send both the kings themselves, and also one of the key players in their plans, horrible nightmares to try to put them off. Yet he doesn't seem to know enough to give his supporters some fairly simple instructions by which he should have been able to make the plan impossible. I suppose since his mortal heroes were up against a defrocked God, Turtledove had to put some limits on how their enemy could use his powers to give them a chance.

There is a similar and more explicitly explained depiction of interaction between pre-industrial humans, and Gods who are much more powerful than humans but neither omnipotent nor omniscient, in a novel which Turtledove published under his real name, Between the Rivers.

Apart from these minor flaws this is a really enjoyable trilogy.

Great Ending for a Series

If you want to read this be sure you've read the Scepter of Mercy and Chernagor Pirates which are the first two stories in this series. Turtledove is absolutely one of the best writers out there. This series draws heavily on his knowledge of Byzantine history for which he earned a Ph.D. The characters are well developed - no cookie cutter heroes here. The pace is deliberate, solutions in real life take time and he conveys this very well. This whole series is classical Turtledove, so if you've been somewhat disappointed with his Yellowstone volcano tales or even the War the Came Early series this is the style I came to appreciate years ago. Since he wrote this series under another name I didn't read them when they first came out over a decade ago. No spoilers, but the ending caught me by surprise. Well worth the read.

A Remedy for What Ails Us Today

This book wasn't quite what I expected, but I learned a lot from it. Life can be like that - and I think it is fair to say that this is one theme in the book. Funny how that happened.

Oddly enough, as I write this, my wife is watching the New York Housewives on TV, and two of them are running a Spartan Race. Quite a coincidence, given that these races are the backdrop for the book. One of the women did not enjoy the experience. Her husband tried to explain the point of what they did, but she didn't get it.

I had never heard of Spartan races before reading this book. Think a race through an obstacle course from hell, and you'll get the picture. Big, unexpected challenges.

The point of these races seems to be to push the runners hard and teach them something about life in the process - in a word, how to overcome. Or maybe, it's better to say that they teach people something about how life really is/should be, as opposed to the "fake" one that today's society has created/imposed upon us (or most of us). Doing the seeming impossible is possible if one applies the Spartan "way".

The book is critical of how children are coddled today, even to the point of being given prizes for showing up to a competition, whether they win of lose. I'm in my 50's, and this is certainly not how it was when I was a kid - what happened? Is there any wonder why kids grow up so "entitled" now? A rude awakening is the result. Bad all around.

There is also criticism of many aspects of modern life. Too much electronics, too much bad food, not enough exercise, etc. No argument here. I made some changes in my life regarding all this recently and am happy with the results.

As an aside, I have to say that the 3-D effect on the cover was very cool. Not sure how they did it.

Overall, I liked the book very much. It made many great points. The writing was very good and kept me interested. Better than many books I've read lately.

I didn't like that the book seemed a bit too much about the Spartan Races/the physical and not enough about what to do with the lessons learned. It might have been a bit more balanced if the book went into other difficult challenges that might teach the same lessons, and that spiritual challenges might get you there as well. Did I miss any of this in the book? Maybe it was there, but didn't seem to be very directly there if so. To me, the real point of pushing yourself so hard physically with a Spartan Race is to have a transforming "spiritual" experience or put yourself on the road to having one - in fairness, the book did seem to go there indirectly, but I didn't see it go there directly, which I think it should have.

In any case, I think this book provides a path for "shock therapy" for what ails us as a society today. Might not work for everyone without a lot of preparation - you do have to be pretty tough to take this path - but I think it would get results.

Would I try it? Hmm... I guess we'll have to wait and see. :)

Mainly a book to sell the authors spartan events

I'm truly disappointed in this book. I had it on pre-order and was under the impression that Joe De Sena, who is admittedly an absolute bad ass, would share his wisdom and secrets to success. Instead, 80% of the book is describing the Spartan Races he runs and testimonials/stories from people who have done one of his races. The actual useful content is minimal and to suggest its 20% useful content is too generous.

Other than the book being an obvious marketing ploy to sell his events, the editing is shocking. There is no flow to the book nor substance.

If the title is something that interests you I would suggest just going on his Spartan events and saving the time and financial investment on this book. I'm sure that people who've ran his races would enjoy this book more but personally, I'm thoroughly disappointed.

Surprisingly good for a book that is essentially an extended advertisement for extreme race events run by the author

Spartan races are those events made famous with titles such as "This race might kill you" and "This race likely will kill you". Their blanket waivers, signed by all race participants, go to graphic lengths to point out the many creative ways in which you may be permanently injured - or die. From the mind that brought young (mostly) men to this sport comes a book that seems partly a justification for the existence of these races, partly an advertisement and finally a mantra for a more adventurous way to live our lives.

Despite the constant sense of urgency, the blatant self-aggrandizement and behavior attributed to the author, by his own hand, that borders in the masochistic, I found this book to be enjoyable. The races are described in gory detail and, despite the reason centers in my brain threatening to quit in protest, I found myself actually considering one of the easier races offered by Joe De Sena.

This book will be appreciated by the usual cast of characters - Cross Fit junkies, triathloners looking for something edgier, fraternity brothers, college athletes and the more fit among desk jockeys. It gives a fairly coherent and complete explanation of why some people choose this lifestyle, how it adds to their lives, and the price they sometimes pay for their devotion. Moreover Mr. De Sena draws connections between Spartan athletes behavior on and off the battlefield. Some may find these stretched but it's not unreasonable to conclude grit is something that applies to many of life's arenas.

As in the first edition, Ross takes the contrarian view that it is not necessary to prove Pontryagin’s Principle before using it. Using the same philosophy, the second edition expands the ideas over four chapters:

• In Chapter 1, basic principles related to problem formulation via a structured approach are introduced:
• What is a state variable?
• What is a control variable?
• What is state space? And so on.
• In Chapter 2, Pontryagin’s Principle is introduced using intuitive ideas from everyday life: Like the process of “measuring” a sandwich and how it relates to costates. A vast number of illustrations are used to explain the concepts without going into the minutia of obscure mathematics. Mnemonics are introduced to help a beginner remember the collection of conditions that constitute Pontryagin’s Principle.
• In Chapter 3, several examples are worked out in detail to illustrate a step-by-step process in applying Pontryagin’s Principle. Included in this example is Kalman’s linear-quadratic optimal control problem.
• In Chapter 4, a large number of problems from applied mathematics to management science are solved to illustrate how Pontryagin’s Principle is used across the disciplines. Included in this chapter are test problems and solutions.

The style of the book is easygoing and engaging. The classical calculus of variations is an unnecessary prerequisite for understanding optimal control theory. Ross uses original references to weave an entertaining historical account of various events. Students, particularly beginners, will embark on a minimum-time trajectory to applying Pontryagin’s Principle.

About the Author
I. Michael Ross is a Professor and Program Director of Control and Optimization at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. A Fellow of the American Astronautical Society, he received the 2010 AIAA Mechanics and Control of Flight Award for advancing pseudospectral optimal control theory and its flight implementations. His research has been featured in "How Stuff Works", SIAM News, IEEE Control Systems Magazine, IEEE Spectrum, Space Daily, and other news outlets. He authored DIDO, the world’s first general-purpose object-oriented software for optimal control. The software is used extensively across various industries to solve practical optimal control problems in astrodynamics, chemotherapy, climate control, data processing, launch vehicle design, missile guidance, quantum control, unmanned systems and much more. Ross has served on several AAS, AIAA, and NASA Technical Committees.

An engineering course on how to solve problems with optimal control using the Pontryagin's principle and the Dido software

This book is passionate introduction course to optimal control based on Pontryagin's principle.
The preface forewarns us, the author says something like "I show first, then explain after". And show he does! In fact, I believe the book deserves five stars for the showing. Prof. Ross takes a four front approach to educate us: lots of drawings and figures, a good amount math, a good amount of "simulation code" (for the Dido program), and a good amount of text. Anybody who has tried to write educational material knows that getting such a multi-view approach right is not easy. And here I need to say that that the book could do with a re-edit to bring everything together better. And therefore my "only" four start grading. Nevertheless, the content is good, especially when you take it as an engineering textbook and not a math book. This is book about understanding the principals and a tool, the difficulties and the solutions, and with such a focus it does very well. Also in a re-edit I would take out the overly self praise about the Dido program: let the student's learn if the tool is good!

Optimal control made easy

This book is an updated version of Ross’ first book. The second edition still has the same four chapters as the first, but each chapter is expanded with lots of details and figures. Ross’ style is easygoing and humorous. For example, what is a state variable? Any variable with a dot! This is the simplest explanation I’ve ever seen. He demystifies state-space representation, Lagrange multipliers, numerical methods etc. and makes you want to learn and read more. He also provides historical accounts that I found quite fascinating. The advanced topics are marked with dangerous bends. If you are a student like me, I say skip all these sections. He begins chapter 2 with his famous line, “You want proof? You can’t handle the proof!” I’m ok with this because I don’t understand the “real proof” anyway. But I must say that I understand Pontryagin’s Principle better now because Ross has a new take on costates. I didn’t know I was using costates in my daily life when I was counting calories in my sandwich! Trust me, this is a real example in this book!

The book contains lots of example problems and solutions. I followed the worked out examples but had difficulty with some of the study problems. There are many other problems in this book with solutions, which are quite good, but he doesn’t explain how he got them. One new feature of the second edition is that there are a lot of example problems with DIDO solutions. A few problems have solutions from other MATLAB solvers too. I tried solving a couple of these problems and didn’t quite get them exactly the way he has it in his book, so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

If you want a book with “theorems and proofs”, this book is NOT for you. If you simply want to understand optimal control, then there is no other book like this one. If you already understand optimal control but want a quick go-to guide, you do not need to buy this book; just download the “Pontryagin’s Principle” chapter for free from the Elissar Global website. There are a few obvious typos here and there but it didn’t bother me too much.

I received this book in great condition and in a timely manner. It was an older addition than what I needed for school, but it still worked out just fine. I saved a lot of money as well. This transaction took place quite a while ago, and I'm just getting to the review.

About the Author

Kathleen Fearn-Banks is Professor of Communication in the Department of Communication at the University of Washington. She joined the faculty in 1990, after 25 years in the communications professions. Her professional experience includes as a feature writer at the Los Angeles Times; a newswriter/ producer/ reporter for KNXT-TV (now KCBS) in Los Angeles; publicist and Media Relations Manager for NBC Television Network. She was vice president of Development and Public Relations for The Neighbors of Watts, an entertainment industry non-profit which raised funds for daycare centers in underprivileged areas of Los Angeles.

This book though somewhat out dated has been a great insight into how the real world operates and the politic NONSENSE THAT DRIVES THE GOVERNMENT SYSTEMS AND SUB SYSTEMS.

Book on Crisis Communication well written and interesting

This is a well written book that is interesting and informative. The cases reviewed are fascinating and I always want to keep reading right to the end of each chapter. I am taking a class that is independent study so it is very helpful to have a book that I enjoy picking up!
