This book provides a guided tour in introducing optimal control theory from a practitioner’s point of view. As in the first edition, Ross takes the contrarian view that it is not necessary to prove Pontryagin’s Principle before using it. Using the same philosophy, the second edition expands the ideas over four chapters:

In Chapter 1, basic principles related to problem formulation via a structured approach are introduced:
What is a state variable?
What is a control variable?
What is state space? And so on.
In Chapter 2, Pontryagin’s Principle is introduced using intuitive ideas from everyday life: Like the process of “measuring” a sandwich and how it relates to costates. A vast number of illustrations are used to explain the concepts without going into the minutia of obscure mathematics. Mnemonics are introduced to help a beginner remember the collection of conditions that constitute Pontryagin’s Principle.
In Chapter 3, several examples are worked out in detail to illustrate a step-by-step process in applying Pontryagin’s Principle. Included in this example is Kalman’s linear-quadratic optimal control problem.
In Chapter 4, a large number of problems from applied mathematics to management science are solved to illustrate how Pontryagin’s Principle is used across the disciplines. Included in this chapter are test problems and solutions.

The style of the book is easygoing and engaging. The classical calculus of variations is an unnecessary prerequisite for understanding optimal control theory. Ross uses original references to weave an entertaining historical account of various events. Students, particularly beginners, will embark on a minimum-time trajectory to applying Pontryagin’s Principle.

About the Author
I. Michael Ross is a Professor and Program Director of Control and Optimization at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. A Fellow of the American Astronautical Society, he received the 2010 AIAA Mechanics and Control of Flight Award for advancing pseudospectral optimal control theory and its flight implementations. His research has been featured in "How Stuff Works", SIAM News, IEEE Control Systems Magazine, IEEE Spectrum, Space Daily, and other news outlets. He authored DIDO, the world’s first general-purpose object-oriented software for optimal control. The software is used extensively across various industries to solve practical optimal control problems in astrodynamics, chemotherapy, climate control, data processing, launch vehicle design, missile guidance, quantum control, unmanned systems and much more. Ross has served on several AAS, AIAA, and NASA Technical Committees.

An engineering course on how to solve problems with optimal control using the Pontryagin's principle and the Dido software

This book is passionate introduction course to optimal control based on Pontryagin's principle.
The preface forewarns us, the author says something like "I show first, then explain after". And show he does! In fact, I believe the book deserves five stars for the showing. Prof. Ross takes a four front approach to educate us: lots of drawings and figures, a good amount math, a good amount of "simulation code" (for the Dido program), and a good amount of text. Anybody who has tried to write educational material knows that getting such a multi-view approach right is not easy. And here I need to say that that the book could do with a re-edit to bring everything together better. And therefore my "only" four start grading. Nevertheless, the content is good, especially when you take it as an engineering textbook and not a math book. This is book about understanding the principals and a tool, the difficulties and the solutions, and with such a focus it does very well. Also in a re-edit I would take out the overly self praise about the Dido program: let the student's learn if the tool is good!

Optimal control made easy

This book is an updated version of Ross’ first book. The second edition still has the same four chapters as the first, but each chapter is expanded with lots of details and figures. Ross’ style is easygoing and humorous. For example, what is a state variable? Any variable with a dot! This is the simplest explanation I’ve ever seen. He demystifies state-space representation, Lagrange multipliers, numerical methods etc. and makes you want to learn and read more. He also provides historical accounts that I found quite fascinating. The advanced topics are marked with dangerous bends. If you are a student like me, I say skip all these sections. Perhaps someone with a more advanced background can comment on his advanced sections.

He begins chapter 2 with his famous line, “You want proof? You can’t handle the proof!” I’m ok with this because I don’t understand the “real proof” anyway. But I must say that I understand Pontryagin’s Principle better now because Ross has a new take on costates. I didn’t know I was using costates in my daily life when I was counting calories in my sandwich! Trust me, this is a real example in this book!

The book contains lots of example problems and solutions. I followed the worked out examples but had difficulty with some of the study problems. There are many other problems in this book with solutions, which are quite good, but he doesn’t explain how he got them. One new feature of the second edition is that there are a lot of example problems with DIDO solutions. A few problems have solutions from other MATLAB solvers too. I tried solving a couple of these problems and didn’t quite get them exactly the way he has it in his book, so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

If you want a book with “theorems and proofs”, this book is NOT for you. If you simply want to understand optimal control, then there is no other book like this one. If you already understand optimal control but want a quick go-to guide, you do not need to buy this book; just download the “Pontryagin’s Principle” chapter for free from the Elissar Global website. There are a few obvious typos here and there but it didn’t bother me too much.

I received this book in great condition and in a timely manner. It was an older addition than what I needed for school, but it still worked out just fine. I saved a lot of money as well. This transaction took place quite a while ago, and I'm just getting to the review.

About the Author

Kathleen Fearn-Banks is Professor of Communication in the Department of Communication at the University of Washington. She joined the faculty in 1990, after 25 years in the communications professions. Her professional experience includes as a feature writer at the Los Angeles Times; a newswriter/ producer/ reporter for KNXT-TV (now KCBS) in Los Angeles; publicist and Media Relations Manager for NBC Television Network. She was vice president of Development and Public Relations for The Neighbors of Watts, an entertainment industry non-profit which raised funds for daycare centers in underprivileged areas of Los Angeles.

This is a well written book that is interesting and informative. The cases reviewed are fascinating and I always want to keep reading right to the end of each chapter. I am taking a class that is independent study so it is very helpful to have a book that I enjoy picking up!

Indispensible Starting Point for New Projects

The Fourth Edition is an advancement over the 2nd edition, the one I "grew up" with. Instead of jumping to cost preparation and option selection, then on to preliminary design, it starts out an excellent introduction, basic requirements for OSHA and EPA (including a good section on HAZOPs), a review of computer-aided design, then on to cost preparation and the rest. After option selection, the authors provide a good solid section on process optimization. This is a new area in the text and well worth reading. All in all, a current, concise design book, ideal for the student or the old hand.

good information said in too many paragraphs

For an undergraduate chemical engineering student, this book has many useful charts of utility costs, safety indices, etc. About those charts, I can only say good things, because it feels a lot better citing a textbook than citing web pages all the time. The other information in the book is useful, but not presented in a useful way. I cannot read this book word by word. It's too dry. What I would rather read is a bulleted list in each chapter with definitions and examples of things like HAZOP and fault tree analysis. Because really, when I finish my design class and I need to look up information on some design principal, I'm going to want an easy to read bulleted list, not a paragraph. I think this book could have about one third the pages that way, which would make it more readable and useful.

Good Starting Point for Economic Investigations

I never had much use for this text while in school. As with most subjects Senior year, we went too fast to appreciate it. With the years, however, I had cause to appreciate Peters & Timmerhaus. It is packed full of rules-of-thumb for preparations of cost estimates and comparing options. Although it is not the best place to end an economic investigation, it is the best place to start one.

Advanced Human Madness

There are some real-life cases where an identical twin takes the place of the known individual. Why? For power, greed, revenge and many other reasons. It's rising up to fight that makes a difference between loving families and destroying enemies. Now the Next-Gens are exposed and an evil one wants power. A good story all together. Make sure to read from the beginning to understand the whole thing.

Disappointed...but still looking forward to the next one.

Overall I really like this series, but this book was a disappointment. It felt like there was nothing but whining and hand wringing through most of the book. The tone just felt flat to me. A major part of what makes these stories good is that the author takes her time with not just the big moments, but also the small stuff. To me it is the small moments in a book that really adds depth to characters and relationships. There wasn't much of that in this book.

This whole series is so full of twists and turns that the books are hard to put down. I have read all six books in less than a week. I love all the characters and their closeness to one another. Being somewhat of a Pollyanna, I'm hoping that Angel will do something to redeem herself. In the meantime, you go Jade.

About the Author

Barbara G. Matthews has had a patchwork quilt of professional career experiences. For nearly five years, she served as an Assessor/Care Manager for the Area Agency on Aging of Dauphin County, PA. Her main responsibility was to visit seniors in their homes to administer a comprehensive assessment, which determined their needs and eligibility for services. Matthews then “retired” to become a full-time caregiver when her mother-in-law moved into her home, an experience that motivated her to write this book. Prior to that, Matthews was literacy coordinator for a Jobs Training Partnership Act agency. Over seven years, she was instrumental in building a thriving learning center program, which included Adult Literacy, English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, General Educational Development, and Adult High School Diploma programs. She was also a Life Skills Instructor with the Dauphin County Prison for four years. Matthews graduated from Kent State in 1969 with a degree in Elementary Education. She also attended one year of graduate school at Kent State and was a graduate assistant in the sociology department. Her graduate education was cut short, both by the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970, and her marriage in June of that year. After college, Matthews taught 4th grade for a year, then began raising a family as a full-time homemaker. She returned to full-time employment when her children were in their pre-teen and teen years. The mother of three and grandmother of nine lives in Harrisburg, PA, with her husband of forty-three years.

Barbara Trainin Blank is an independent writer and editor who heads her own company, Blank Page Writing, now based in Maryland. A writer for newspapers, magazines, and web sites, in areas as diverse as the arts, health and medicine, religion, and societal trends, she has contributed to Health, Emergency Medicine, Hadassah, Business2Business, and B magazines, as well as to Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Patriot-News, and Carlisle Sentinel, among others. Trainin Blank also provides editorial services to agencies, businesses, and individuals and has edited several books, including for the U.S. Army War College, an interior designer, nonprofit consultant, and major NYC social service organization. A graduate of Barnard College in New York City, her hometown, she also writes plays, several of which have been presented in several local and regional theaters. Trainin Blank is married and has two children.

Great Resource

It's a small book but a great resource that contains a wealth of information and heartfelt insights. I recommend this book to anyone who has provided care or who anticipates having to take on the care of an aging family member.

Caregiving: It's hard work

What I like about this book is the different perspectives on caregiving as there are many contributors. This provides any individual or professional reading the book with different scenarios, which include common situations and feelings. The authors also describe their own care giving experiences.

Caregiving itself has a different definition for each individual providing it. It is hard work from what I have read in the book and witnessed myself in interactions with clients and family. While I have children myself, caregiving for an adult is very different. The needs of a child can be more or less than the needs of an adult and much easier to carry/lift a child than an adult! Also, as Barbara pointed out to me, for her an important difference between caregiving for children vs. care giving for older adults is that the first is a hopeful process preparing the child for a good future and the second is a process of trying to make life as comfortable as possible for the aging adult as they proceed toward the end of life.

The book is worth reading and is very comprehensive.

The best book I've seen on the challenge of eldercare, a book for caregivers by caregivers. I wish I'd had this book years ago. I would not have felt so alone and overwhelmed. Barbara Matthews and Barbara Trainin Blank include their own caregiving stories as well as stories from a wide range of caregivers, offering a wealth of honest insight, helpful advice, useful strategies, and a wealth of information. I recommend this book highly as a valuable resource to help deal with a challenge that most of us will face some day.
