Great Music book! I purchased this book for my boyfriend's birthday (he's a talented musician and this was his favorite movie growing up) and he loves it!

Good Book

This book is an excellent source of music for the movie, Spirit. My daughter loves the pictures and loves to hear her favorite songs being played on the piano. It is hard to get the book away from her to practice. I do wish there were more pictures. There are just a few. This would not be a good buy if the person is just getting the book for their child to look at the pictures.

These are my FAVORITE songs (from my favorite movie) and I play piano

Firstly, this sheet music is hard to find. All sheet music is, unless you are at a sheet music store, and even then, I hadn't seen it anywhere but the internet when I ordered it.

This paper-back book has all the songs from the Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron soundtrack (as you can tell from the details), as well as a couple of Hans Zimmer's instrumentals.

After ordering this, my only worry was that the piano/vocal/guitar style of music would be a hindrance to playing and/or a compromise to the quality of the sound. This was not the case. The notes sound exact and are not compromised or simplified in any way. This is as exact as transcription gets.

The music is written on three clefs: a vocal line and two piano lines, one for the melody and the other for the harmony. There are also chords written above the staves for those who prefer a less exact, perhaps easier-to-play sound.

The fight against globalization and the war in Iraq has led to a revival of grassroots activism. But there are many other causes for which communities organize: lack of sewage in poor neighborhoods, the need to support public schools, and affordable housing, to name just a few. Chambers is executive director of the Industrial Areas Foundation; founded by the noted organizer Saul Alinsky, the foundation is dedicated to supporting community organizing. A "radical" for Chambers is "a person who searches for meaning and affirms community." Thus, this is not an easy-to-consult handbook, but a book encouraging reflection about public life and ideals; the gap between the world "as it is" and "as it should be"; self-interest vs. self-sacrifice and other polarities; and how to create actions that not only receive momentary press attention but that are effective. Readers looking for quick tactical tips won't find them here, but readers looking for a solid foundation on which to base political action will find much to think about within these pages.

Roots for Radicals review

Roots for Radicals: Organizing for Power, Action, and Justice by Edward Chambers, with forward by Studs Terkel, provides a comprehensive approach of how to create social change in our complex and ever changing world. Edward Chambers was trained under the founder of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) Saul Alinsky. Chambers is credited for modernizing Alinsky's IAF model and his perspective is beautifully illustrated in the book Roots for Radicals. I feel that this is a must read for anyone his is interested in community organizing for social change. While some aspects of the book are dense, it is well worth the time to contemplate the challenging questions that Chambers poses - you will be happy you did!

Best Parts Are the Personal Stories

What I loved best about this book are the stories that Chambers told about his experiences, and the experiences of others using the Saul Alinsky organizing techniques. The theory part wasn't as interesting, although necessary to understanding the point of the organizing techniques.

Chambers updates Alinksy's earlier Rules for Radicals. It offers practical approaches to social organizing. The Industrial Areas Foundation teaches in politics there is organized money and organized people. To counter organized money, people must organize. And, as Roots for Radicals points out, organized people can strongly impact politics - but it is a lot of work!

Great for advanced EFL

This is the second year I've used this book with my 10th grade advanced English as a foreign language students here in Mexico. It's a great book for generating classroom discussion, essay assignments, cultural awareness, and critical thinking. The authentic readings are rich with important academic vocabulary, and the paraphrase exercises really help students learn to put ideas in their own words. I highly recommend this book for advanced, mature students at the high school or university level.
