No wading through endless text waiting for the proverbial punch line, each chapter is a tangible shift for an organization. If a particular chapter doesn't happen to apply to your business or employer, just go to the next one - it probably will. It's a huge pet peave when authors blather on endlessly to impress you with their amazing thinking or accomplishments, forcing you to mine for the actual gold in the book (if it's even there). This book does none of that, and I am thankful to the author for not wasting my limited time. Excellent return on invested time and money. Bravo!

and it walked like a dog with booties on

My first rig was a human rig with IK legs, and it walked like a dog with booties on. That was before I read this and followed it step by step. It clarified so many things (like how each type of constraint works and when to use which) in only about a day (which is how long it took me to read it straight through). Working through the material took a little longer, but it was so worth it. I can now rig pretty much anything (so far) with very few problems. I'd ABSOLUTELY recommend this for anyone who struggles with rigging. It will be a gateway to more advanced things, because you must understand the basics.

I would have given this book a better review but to be honest

I would have given this book a better review but to be honest, I couldn't follow the book because the print quality was terrible. Most of the the time, the odd misprinted page doesn't bother me, but this is a technical manual. Some of the pages were so blurry that I couldn't look at them without a headache. Ten years ago, when my eyes were better this might not have bothered me, but it does now. This isn't a critique of Mr. Rodriguez's information, but the publisher's printing. If I were the author, I would be very upset with such a low quality printing.

In London, Luke was offered the post of Head of the Architecture Department at the newly established Bank of China, where IM Pei’s father was a senior figure. Luke spent the next seven years in the inimitable city of Shanghai designing buildings all over China for the Bank before the Japanese invasion in 1937 forced him, and countless others, to flee to the proxy wartime capital of Chongqing. In 1945 he returned to Shanghai where he formed a partnership with four other Chinese graduates of UK universities; but civil war (between the Communists and Nationalists) once again caused him and others to uproot in 1949. Initially intent on fleeing with the Nationalists to Taiwan, Luke was almost convinced to stay in Communist China but decided finally to move to Hong Kong. There, for the third time in his life, he had to establish his career all over again. Despite many challenges, he eventually prospered, becoming a pioneer in the design of private residences, schools, hospitals, chapels and public housing.

A fascinating study of an "unknown" talent in architecture

With the book "Luke Him Sau: China's Missing Modern," author Edward Dennison gives the reader more than just a biography of an important but relatively unknown Chinese architect. Its pages also fit Luke Him Sau into the panorama of China's twentieth-century evolution from a populous but lesser nation, to a totalitarian state, to whatever it became late in the century. All of this is seen through the experiences of the book's central figure, Luke. His life was all the more remarkable given the conditions in which he and his family often had to live.

Luke is part of China's "missing" modern because his major contributions to the development of architecture in China were "erased from history," intentionally ignored for many decades because of his decision to leave China after takeover of the country by the Communists.

His life was profoundly influenced by the complicated and dynamic changes taking place, especially in China, during the first half of the 20th century. This book relates not only how these changes affected his career, but also his personal life, since he suffered the effects of politics, war, and destruction like everyone else.

Born in the British colony of Hong Kong, Luke was the son of a successful businessman with a high regard for classical education. When Luke began his study of architecture, it was regarded as a lower and included branch of engineering. He received his architectural training from Western sources, first as an apprentice with a British architectural firm and then through further study in London at the Architectural Association. His years in London coincided with the development of modernism in architecture in the Western world.

As he was finishing his training in London, at 25 years of age, he was offered the opportunity to head the newly formed architectural department of the Bank of China. He produced designs for numerous branch banks and associated structures. His most well-known project is arguably the Bank of China Headquarters in Shanghai.

Luke was a pragmatic and practical architect, able to combine the best features of Eastern and Western design. Much of his work served public needs, from banks and other commercial buildings to high density housing.

A plethora of photographs of Luke's completed projects are in the book, as well as many floor plans. It also works as a coffee-table book -- it's almost as interesting to look through as to read.

A minor quibble is that it would have been useful to have some maps included, particularly in the first chapter which provides historical context to China's entry into the 20th century. Also, the Chinese names get a bit confusing at times, but there's no solution to that.

Interesting take on a biography...

When I first picked up this book, I wasn't sure if it was a coffee table book, a biography, or something else. However, I found that the book is a very effective visual biography - plenty of photos enmeshed within the work itself as opposed to a "traditional" biography where the images are all on center pages.

I really like the way that the author integrates the images with the subject material; it lends itself to easy absorption and understanding of the presentation, and is a very effective tool.

The only challenge I had with the work was that I am totally unfamiliar with Chinese names, and therefore I struggled, but for someone that understands more about Chinese history & is relatively familiar with the naming conventions & structures, this book will indeed be a wonderful addition to the history on this period.

I greatly enjoyed the work, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone interested in the architectural history of the era and the region. It's a fascinating work and a great addition to the historical literature on the topic.

more a biography than a showcase of Sau's architecture

This is an interesting book, and provides insightful background into a tumultuous period of time, and its impact on Chinese architects (including Sau, whose life is less "representative" of such architects, and more "illustrates how tumultuous and unique everyone's paths were at that point in time").

That said, I personally had been hoping for many pictures of Sau's buildings, and although many of those were included, this picture is definitely more of a biography than a coffee-table-architecture-inspiration book. It has about as much text as pictures (maybe 50% of each), and the pictures it DOES include are often images of Sau at various phases of his life, or places he stayed / places he visited / pictures of his family, rather than "buildings he designed." The latter are included, but maybe... 20%(?) of the pictures, so they're in there, but not the primary focus.

This book will benefit students of history and/or architecture more than people just looking for a coffee-table book of pretty or interesting buildings.

Worth waiting for

My recommendation is to not buy the volume "The Patton Papers 1885 to 1940" until the publisher makes "The Patton Papers 1940 to 1945" available. There is no doubt that Patton's writings during and directly after World War 2 are more interesting to students of history, though by far more controversial (read: politically incorrect). Because of this, I derive little comfort from reading on Amazon that "We do not have a reprint date for this title, but expect to be able to ship it to you within 3-5 weeks." A lot of politically incorrect writing appears to mysteriously become "unavailable" in this day and age, while the politically correct never does. I have placed an order for the volume "not available at this time" ("The Patton Papers 1940 to 1945") and will order Volume 1 (1885 to 1940)after Volume 2 arrives. A case in point is that Field Marshal Montgomery's politically incorrect writing after the war was classified for 50 years and only recently released. I'm sure the same people regret not sealing Montgomery's writings for 100 years.

Wonderful, vibrant and a bit quirky

[[VIDEOID:mo3R8XGZ82AO5GA]]Here's the artbook for director Jorge R Gutierrez's 3D animated film The Book of Life. Gutierrez was born in Mexico City and raised in Tijuana, and in this 192-page hardcover artbook, you'll see that the inspiration for this film comes from his hometown and the rich history of Mexico.

Highlights of the book are the designs for the characters and environment.

As far as character designs go, The Book of Life definitely has some of the weirdest and quirkiest designs compared to other 3D animated movies. Their costumes are heavily decorated and lushly coloured. For example, the goddess La Muerte wears a huge red hat with burning candles on top and little skulls hanging around the rim, and the bottom of her red dress is also covered with burning candles.

Many characters are actually puppets with exposed joints. Main character Manolo has stars, hearts and skulls plastered all over his boxy costume. Skeleton versions of the characters look great with fanciful skull designs just like how some tribes like to create artworks out of skulls. Even the bull Toro Muerto has its horns intricately carved with symbols.

The artworks are very much inspired by Mexican folk art. Gutierrez gets his inspiration from lucha libre, mustaches, street taco stands, bullfighting posters, Spanish comics, spaghetti Westerns, etc. The result is a very colourful and visual world.

The environment art for the Land of the Living, Remembered and Forgotten have influences from ancient civilisation such as Aztec, Mayan and Olmec. It's interesting to see the artists use those influences and design them for an animated film. If I don't know anything about the film, I would have thought the civilisation in the film celebrates colour.

There are lots of details to look out for. In the Land of the Living, there are several buildings with shapes inspired by Mayan temples. Tombstones are lavishly decorated with ornaments and offerings. Houses in the town are top heavy just like the characters to make them feel more macho. There are commentary throughout that talks about the designs.

The Art of The Book of Life is a wonderful, vibrant and quirky artbook. Highly recommended.

If you only buy one "Art of" book this year

...make it this one.
There's a review here with a video of a guy flipping through the whole book so no one's gonna top that, but I'm just adding my two cents that this book is gorgeous and a must-have for anyone in visual development. It's amazing to see the intricacy and level of detail that went into every aspect of this film's design. What's most striking to me is how closely the final film actually stuck to the style of the static art. It's common to see stylized concept art that gets watered down and homogenized in the final product - not so with The Book of Life. You can tell a lot of heart went into this production and it actually made it all the way onto the big screen. Easily one of the most beautiful and intriguing "Art of" books I've come across.

Beautiful and Inspiring

The book is simply gorgeous. There are so many details you miss in the movie just because the images are in motion and you are absorbed in the story. Sitting down with the book you can study all those beautiful details. For example, skulls and hearts are a visual theme. It is fun trying to count all the skulls in a picture. Just when you thought you've counted them all, you'll find another one.

This movie has such a beautiful and unique look. It is enjoyable to browse the pages and gain insight into the director's design and color choices. As an artist, it is very inspiring book.

GREAT!

I just recently purchased this book and it was one that was difficult to put down. While there were a few bits that I didn't find too terribly funny, the vast majority of them were very funny. Some of his bits were even laugh out loud hysterical. This book is grouped up into what the different stand-up routines are about, which I liked because it was well organized and jokes weren't just thrown around randomly. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who's a fan of the comedian and the character Jerry Seinfeld.

Easy reading, but probably for fans only

I received this book in hard cover format as a gift, being a fan of the show and stand up performances, and enjoyed it tremendously. That having been said, it is a not much more than a light reading experience, and at under 200 pages (mostly lightly filled) is little more than a mirror of his most well known material. Fans like myself will not be disappointed, but this is not an insightful expose of what makes Jerry tick, and moreover is really just selling ice to eskimos. Good fun, but don't expect too much

About the Author
Joanne Fleisher is a lifelong resident of Philadelphia. She is a graduate of Simmons College and of the Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. She developed the Web site LavenderVisions.com, an online counseling resource for women all over the world, and moderates Ask Joanne, a Q&A board exclusively for married women attracted to women. She and her partner of 30 years co-parented her daughters with her ex-husband, and have shared the joys of their four grandchildren.

A Gentle, Practical, Extremely Valuable Book Handling a Sensitive Subject

This is a gentle and honest book for self-inquiry for those women who are married and questioning their sexual identity. It helps you to sort out the myriad of complex feelings that ensue when you are in love with another woman, wish you were in love with another woman, wonder if what's wrong with your marriage is that you really belong with a woman, and more. In this sorting out, the author is kind and non-judgmental of diverse beliefs, and does not have an agenda---feminist or otherwise---in the courses of action that would be best for the reader; instead she helps you to find the answers that are right for you.

The book facilitates this self-searching by a terrific format. It is organized into chapters by topic, including: questioning, finding your sexual identity, examining your marriage, husbands' responses, managing the roller coaster, girlfriends, helping your children, and support. The chapters are full of gentle questioning and supportive ways of dealing with what is inevitably a difficult time in a woman's life, no matter what the outcome.

Then, at the end of each chapter, there is a section called "What You Can Do Now"---simple actions that you really can do, even if you're uncertain and up-in-the-air about so much else. Each of these action sections is broken up into several parts like:

"Remind yourself..." (with good things to remind yourself of---for example, "Self-understanding is not a linear process. I may take one step backward for every two steps forward."),

"Ask yourself this question..." (a thought-provoking question related to the chapter topic---for example, "What messages about sexuality, direct or covert, did I get from my parents, teachers, clergy, friends? And which do I continue to hold inside me?"),

"Practice this technique for handling your feelings..." (a do-able and helpful coping technique---for example, keeping your focus on staying in the present), and

"Take one step..." (a concrete action step that you can take, as opposed to one that you are unsure about---for example, making a timeline of the key sexual events in your life and how they shaped your thoughts about your sexuality).

These action sections help you on what is a lengthy and patient journey.

The book helps you to realize that you are not alone, that other women have been where you are. It does not sugar-coat the process of exploring your sexual identity, however. It is realistic and presents the difficulties and potential costs as well as the benefits of such a journey. The biggest gift this book gave me is that it helped me to not feel so scared---as do most women when thinking about huge life changes. It helped me to see that I would be okay no matter what choices my future held.

It is also an excellent book to be read not only by the woman who is questioning her sexuality, but by the woman's husband, girlfriend, adult children, or those who simply wish to understand this difficult process that is so seldom written about in such a sensitive way. Highly recommended.

Struggling with these issues? This is an excellent resource.

This is the most well organized & readable book I've found on this topic.

The therapist author lays out a framework of considerations, giving the reader many options to consider. The author's intent is not to advocate one solution, but rather to give real pros & cons to the many options.

The author does not think one form of relationship is an ideal. She advocates the idea that different forms of relationships, groupings, priorities, & boundaries work better for different needs. Being a therapist, she relays the experiences of herself and her clients who have travelled these paths. From her observations with many clients, she does not believe there is one relationship type that is best for all. She does not categorize certain relationship formations as secondary or less than ideal. The quality of the relationship form is dependent on the people involved.

The book discusses ways of balancing disclosure & openness with the dangers caused by society, religion, spouses, & guilt. Please don't misread the title, the author generally believes in being honest with yourself and the people close to you.

The author makes her points & moves on. The book is an artistic balance between narrative, structure, personal testimonials, & theory.

If you're looking for a book to give you the answers to your questions, this book is not primarily intent on giving answers. This book will give you more respect for more types of relationships. And it shows that many forms of relationships have comparably difficult characteristics. It will probably make you more considerate of others, more respectful of their choices, and more admiring of the obstacles they have overcome.
