Fascinating read!

The Tree House is an interesting read.

What would you do if you found out you were part of some medical experiment when you were born and the chip they implanted in you to help keep you safe actually would kill you years later?

Hailey, a 21-year-old woman, and others were part of this and you won't believe what they do. This is more than an adventure; it is a tale of trust, family, broken dreams and love. I found myself immersed immediately and unable to do anything else until I finished it.

I recommend this book to everyone who feels different, whose life isn't going as planned and to those who are eternal optimists. Everyone will take something from this read.

Kudos to the author and I hope she writes some more. I am hooked on her!

Where have you been all my life?

There are some truly unique gems in the self-publishing industry, and The Tree House is definitely one of them. I had a hard time putting this one down, and right now, I'm having a hard time putting this review together to fully express my feelings for this book. I am head over heels in love with it. It was.... wow. I fully expected something predictable, something I always come across, something I would easily get bored with, but there was none of that. This book hit home-run about tens time.
At first, the start of the book was 'eh, it's okay'. Hailey's home is broken into and her parents yell at her to run, so she does. The story instantly picks up speed. Hailey is chased by two men in suits, who are pointing guns at her head. She ends up being saved by this No-Name stranger with lovely eyes. And at that exact point where Hailey meets No-Name, I thought the book would fall into the usual romantic cliche. She met her handsome Prince Charming and they rode off into the sunset.
I was wrong. TOTALLY wrong. So take it from me: Do NOT judge this book by the first ten pages. It gets good. Really good.

I was expecting a Disney 'they lived happily ever after' with some random singing and nice choreography and a whole lot of kissing. Well, I got the kissing part, but this pure blood, sweat, and tears all over the place. Definitely not Disney's style. This had the gripping suspense of the best action movies I've seen (and that's saying something). The book takes over a time span of about two weeks and a lot of things happen during these two weeks. It moves lightning quick, but Shay Lynam definitely knows how to pace herself.

Hailey is 100% human and so is everyone else (just thought I'd point that out), they were just not supposed live through their birth. So Eli Scott created a special chip to keep these types of children alive. It was brilliant, the miracle of all miracles and it was going to sell for millions, until the chip started to malfunction and all these children (now adults) began to die horrible deaths. He didn't want people suing him so what did he do? He contracted a couple of killers and sent them out to get rid of the evidence. Luckily for Hailey, Jack (who I will now call 'The Maelstrom of Emotions') finds her and... well, Hailey sort of forces him to help her. She's a tough girl like that.

Hailey is a fierce and utterly unpredictable girl. She cries a lot, but under the circumstance, who wouldn't? So many terrible things happen to her. Gosh, I don't even know how she kept going. Shay Lynam had no mercy on her, she was constantly facing some sort of obstacle whether it was a gunman or Jack or her own brother. I do admire her, not only because of her emotional strength, but because she remained levelheaded even when she had all the reasons not to.
Jack (The Maelstrom of Emotions) was... a maelstrom of emotions. He could make me giddy, depressed, and ready to shoot his head off all in one. He had this bipolar thing going on (or maybe it's an all guy thing) where he acted like he hated Hailey when he was actually crushing on her. To put it short, he could get under anyone's skin. He wasn't a 'swoon-worthy' guy, he was just inevitable and captivating. The sort of guy you know is bad but you just can't look away from.
Their relationship was complicated. It was perfect really. They were both angry and hurt and they needed someone to look after them even if they didn't know it.

Story-wise, people die in this book. I know that sounds like a stupid observation, but I really got to know the characters and I actually felt connected to them. I cared about them.

Overall, I LOVED The Tree House. There were a lot of grammatical and spelling errors, but I soon found myself flying past those. The story was fast and furious and I was in for a lot of surprises. Now, the ending was exactly a cliffhanger, but I'm pretty sure there will be a book two.
I. CANNOT. Wait!
Do I recommend it? Oh. Yeah.

Simply GREAT

Seldom do I find a piece of writing that is both interesting and entertaining. This is just such a book. It had great character development and a strong and fast moving story line. For a first time book this young lady has done herself well. I encourage her to continue with her writing. It can only get better as she continues to develop her skills and desire to write. I was drawn into her story and found it most difficult to put the book down. Actually, I kept it by my side and when I had five or more minutes to continue reading I would return to the story. I especially like the ending. It was imaginative and rather surprising to say the least. I more than recommend this book to anyone who loves exciting and fast moving stories. A story with a serious feel to it as the girl in the story discovered and then dealt with her problem. I always thought of a tree house as a sanctuary, a place where one could find solitude and peace when life was dealing someone some serious problems. This was far beyond that. GOOD JOB! B. D. Many indigenous Hawaiians who have moved to the islands' cities languish at the bottom of the socioeconomic scale and are thought to have lost their cultural roots. Initially apolitical urban Hawaiians were often skeptical of activists who sought to revitalize traditional ways; yet, as Karen L. Ito shows, Hawaiian women in particular continue to maintain and express crucial aspects of their cultural heritage in their lifestyle and interactions with others. Ito conducted intensive fieldwork with six Honolulu families, all of which shared the distinguishing characteristics of Hawaii's matrifocal society. In her close examination of the friendships and family relations among the women in these households, she focuses on the significance of a traditional manner of speech known as "talk story" which they use when conversing together. She describes how her subjects employ metaphoric language to address issues concerning responsibility, retribution, understandings of self and personhood, and methods for conflict resolution. For these "lady friends," Ito finds, the emotional quality and quantity of their social relationships help define personal identity while their common concepts of morality bind them together. By applying ethnopsychological strategies to the exploration of culture, Ito demonstrates cultural continuity at a level where most observers would not expect to find it. Lady Friends brings a new dimension to Hawaiian research.

Aloha to Karen Ito for writing this book

I could identify with the stories so deeply as I am from Hawaii, but I am sure even a reader from outside our culture will find some of the customs, point of views, and idiosyncrasies familiar and amusing as somehow the human experience crosses cultures. The book isn't long, but Karen Ito manages to give some historical and cultural background to set up a frame of reference for non-Hawaiians. The book has a glossary in the back to help with the Hawaiian words used and is indexed. It not overly scholarly and thus keeps the humanity of the subjects. The effect of Western culture on the Hawaiians is also illustrated with some statistics as well as the personal stories/interviews of the women. The copyright is 1999 so it's been about 15 years since it was written and I would love for an update of this book. It would come at a crucial time for Hawaii as so many new influences are coming to change my home state even further, not the least of which are the Arabs who purchased a sizable tract of land and are building bunches of condos, the purchase of Lanai by Larry Ellison (Oracle founder) who plans to develop it, the influx of the wealthy snowbirds and celebrities looking to enjoy the mild climate of Hawaii, the building of a rail transit system, and at the same time "spiritual" retreats, tours, healing centers, etc. springing up. And last but hardly least the native Hawaiian rule movement and flowering of interest in Hawaiian language and culture by native Hawaiians and the Japanese.

I came across some of this book online while doing some research into the ho'oponopono ceremony. What interested me was the influence of Western culture and Christianity on this Hawaiian tradition. In particular I was interested in the conflict and perhaps confusion that results from trying to keep the traditional Hawaiian ways in the face of changing Western influences. The Christian view of most indigenous spiritual practices is they are evil or at least superstition yet the ho'oponopono practice was being used within the Hawaiian Christian churches but a heavily Christianized version. Karen Ito's documentation of this ceremony was very helpful to my understanding of what the ho'oponopono was compared to the new age version currently being taught and capitalized on.

I have also had some contact with Native Americans and many feel you cannot practice native ways while being a Christian because of the Christian view of their ways. I am not a native Hawaiian, but I can see and sympathize with the resulting conflict. These days the new age version of the ho'oponopono ceremony is apparently a greatly watered down version about "forgiveness" that seems more like positive affirmations rather than what it was originally. I am not saying positive affirmations aren't useful it just isn't the fullness and depth of what the ho'oponopono was originally and we are even farther away from the original ceremony from just 15 years ago. Reading about the Christianized version of the ho'oponopono you can see bits of what the original ceremony was probably like. It was no doubt a powerful healing ceremony aimed at getting at the root of an illness or "dis-ease" in a person or group/family and bringing about healing through the prophetic and personal skills of the kahu(s). I also shared bits of the book with some Hawaiian friends, one who does his version of Hawaiian healing and a kahu. I asked the kahu if anyone is currently doing the ho'oponopono with a visioner, prophersier and rebuker as in the Waimanalo version described in the book and as far as the kahu knows it is not. For me it is a microcosm of a culture not only rapidly changing but being lost.

Obviously I enjoyed this book and it also helped my personal research and understanding but even the casual reader interested in learning a bit about Hawaii will find this interesting. For me this was a small but potent look at a slice of Hawaii.

Essential insight on effective leadership

This slim paperback might be hard to notice on a shelf filled with large hardbound management texts, but once you read it, you will know that it truly stands out from the rest. Mr. Brown has distilled the wisdom of managers from hundreds of companies into thirteen simple precepts that anyone in a position of authority should immediately memorize and put into practice. Fans of "instant answer" management fad books should probably look elsewhere, because this author teaches that real leadership requires introspection, dedication, and hard work... in short, he speaks the truth.
These are the 13 principles, stated more positively:
1. Accept personal accountability.
2. Develop your people.
3. Influence thinking, don't try to control results.
4. Avoid cliques and office politics.
5. Tailor your management style to the needs of your employees.
6. Keep an eye on the bottom line.
7. Concentrate on objectives instead of problems.
8. Be a boss, not a buddy.
9. Set standards.
10. Train your people.
11. Demand competence.
12. Recognize quality performance from all your employees.
13. Do not manipulate people.

Excellent Reading for New and Old

I wish I can give away the books to everyone I know. It is very good, down-to-earth and practical rules of managing. And the exercises and the contracts at the end of each chapter really works!
I am a new person in the workforce with no prior experience, and now I understand the grounds on how effective and successful managers operates. I am also impressed by the usability of the content, meaning that even where I come from (which is not US) the errors and how to avoid it is amazingly applicable. Some people who I respected are also showing the qualities described by the book. Excellent reading. Highly recommended for young executives and newly appointed managers. It might be helpful to buy extra copies to be forwarded to some ineffective managers :P

Good Common Sense with a Few Gems

I always dislike it when books sensationalize problems. To call these errors "Fatal" as in YOU COULD DIE!?!?! seems extreme to me. Very few errors in life are fatal, and surely managers have enough stress in their worlds without having to worry about FATAL errors to deal with. Let's just call these "errors" and begin working on them.

The first question is, of course, what ARE the 13 errors. They are: Refusing to accept personal responsibility, failing to develop people, trying to control rather than influence people, joining the wrong crowd, managing everyone the same way, forgetting about profit, focussing on problems instead of goals, being too friendly, not setting standards, not training your employees, condoning incompetence, recognizing only the top performers, and trying to manipulate people.

You can say that many of these are common sense - but that's true for any management book. Dealing with human beings IS common sense. Still, many of us forget that sometimes - or need a few tips on dealing with a specific situation. For example, some managers feel that the issues are all with the employee and that the employee should just "fix themselves and do the job, dammit". We've all worked for a BAD manager though and know that a lot of how well an employee does his/her job is based on the management. Another aspect of this is that the book talks directly about achieving good results. It reminds you that your aim should be good results. Not in a "burn the villages and get the gold" way, but in a "it's better to reach your goal efficiently rather than waste 12 hours doing it in a poor way".

I think that's an important distinction for people to make. Many managers have long, complex procedures and work tons of hours - then pressure their employees to do the same and "measure up". Instead, of the managers made their lives more organized and simplified, they could have the same end results with far less stress and time. All humans need time to rest and relax - managers AND employees. It's important to focus on that goal, vs trying to seem as busy as possible in inefficient ways.

On the other hand, the book has some areas where it's very theoretical but not directly helpful. They say that if you expect your employees to do well and give them training, then they naturally will do well. That we managers just have to "get out of the way". This certainly isn't always true! There are employees who simply will look for ways to avoid doing work or shunting work to others even when they know what they should do and how to do it. To ignore these realities is to be frustrated.

There's a section where they say an employee's self motivation and self esteem are important - but truly, how many managers could "retrain" an adult who is set in his or her ways? Sure, it's good to know that an employee has low self esteem in order to talk with him in an effective manner - but managers will rarely have success in "fixing" an adult employee's personal psyche problems.

Another section talks about how managing isn't always easy. I do think this is an important lesson for many managers to learn. Yes, it sucks to have to make some decisions - but you have to do it. It's hard to discipline an employee you like - but you do it the best way you can. If you simply avoid doing certain things, everybody suffers as a result. This topic is covered in several different ways - you have to set up guidelines, you have to enforce those guidelines and give specific, direct commentary if someone is slacking off. You can't let it slide because it's easier on you. You have to step up and address it so that you manage the problem.

While many of these issues may be common sense for established managers, the tips can prove quite useful for new members. I do find a few gems in here that even older managers might find helpful to add into their arsenal.

A good book to at least read at the library. If you get it for yourself, lend it out to a few friends - you might be surprised at how long it takes for them to choose to return it to you.

About the Author

Charles Carroll is an independent consultant. Initially educated at the U.S. Naval Academy, he later earned an MS in Systems Management at the University of Southern California and served as a Supply, Logistics and Systems Officer in the Marine Corps. He then worked at Sprint Corporation and General Electric’s Employers Reinsurance Corporation (ERC), where he was trained and certified as an internal consultant in GE’s Six Sigma Quality processes,served as a Master Black Belt for the IT Department, administered the local and offshore outsourcing programs, automated project management, and established a global Project Management Office within ERC’s IT department.

Charlie serves as an independent consultant in project/program/PMO management, process improvement, and application development. He has written articles for a number of professional publications, spoken at domestic and international conferences, and developed a number of project management and Six Sigma tools and training for clients. About the Author
Dr. Robin W. Lovin (B.A., Northwestern University; B.D., Ph.D. Harvard University) is Cary Maguire University Professor of Ethics at Southern Methodist University. Prof. Lovin served as Dean of the Perkins School of Theology from 1994 until 2002 and previously held teaching positions at Emory University and the University of Chicago, and he was Dean of the Theological School at Drew University. He is an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church and is active in local and national church events. His research interests include social ethics, religion and law, and comparative religious ethics. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous scholarly journals, including the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, Studies in Christian Ethics, and the Journal of Law and Religion, and he is an editor-at-large for the Christian Century.

Lovin's text is not intended to provide guidelines for ethical leadership as a Christian. It is not designed to be a programmatic statement of position on particular moral issues of our day. It is not designed to be a theological treatise of his own "moral theology."

Lovin's text is a profoundly simple and easy to read text that introduces the basic aspects of thinking about ethics from a Christian theological standpoint. It is an ideal first textbook for use in undergraduate courses on Theological Ethics, which is precisely how it is most commonly used. Though brief, the text is dense with helful characterizations of complex arguments that take center stage in the academic field at present.

As a student of Christian Ethics, I can certainly say with confidence that unindoctrinated readers will be introduced to many such conversations without even knowing it, which is the real beauty of Lovin's accomplishment. This is a text that focuses on the issues of ethics as a discipline and how Christian's "do" ethics without getting bogged down by particular scholars and their nuanced arguments.

BUT, and most importantly, readers of this text who later encounter those arguments or arguments concerning the same themes will be able to join in and contribute responsibly and intelligently.

This text is suitable for church-based religious education programs, undergraduate courses, and simply for interested thinkers of all types.

Excellent summary of Christian oriented ethics

The title says it all. The book is one of the essential guide books from the series of the same name. It is clearly written in a logical format that builds on the good everyone seeks through goals, rules, and virtues to a point where one can see community at work. This manuscript by Lovin is an excellent first text in Christian ethics for the student new to the study of the subject. It also reminds the experienced scholar of the basics. If you are looking for something deeper, you may need to check texts by Bonhoeffer (Ethics (Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, Vol. 6) or Gula (Reason Informed by Faith: Foundations of Catholic Morality), but for the basics, the Lovin text is a fine primer that crosses ecumenical lines.
