Casca is a down-to-Earth, practical man who is content with his life as a soldier, and enjoys the rituals of daily life as a Roman. He drinks, gambles, and whores his way through life until he reaches a crucial crossroads - Christ's crucifixion. This is not a story of gentle reminders to live without sin or seek redemption. In the jungles of Viet Nam, Casca appears in a military hospital, suffering with a head wound that should be fatal. His skull is torn open, and brain is exposed, with a shard of shrapnel lodged within. As the astonished staff looks on, his tissues visibly repair themselves. A flurry of activity to resolve this medical miracle ensues, and once he awakens in hospital, Casca's two-thousand-year history is narrated to the surgeon in charge of his case. Buckle up, because it's going to be a harrowing journey.

Read this series years ago when it first came out in the paperback. Gave my copies away and now decided I wanted to reread, that is the reason for the Kindle copy. It seems strange the orginal books was either $2.95 or $3.95 (paper back.) Now they get $10.00 for a copy that once digitized the expense ends.

A Mercenary for the Centuries

The author of this series is Barry Sadler, the Green Beret Staff Sergeant combat medic who served in the Vietnam War. Sadler's number-one smash, "The Ballad of the Green Berets", was one of the few songs of the 1960's to cast the US military in a positive light. He went on to author military thrillers including Phu Nham, Razor, Rescue and Cry Havoc. Sadler's later years were controversial. He was convicted of killing a man over a woman with a gunshot to the head. Sadler, too, died from a head shot eleven years later under mysterious circumstances. Some claim it took place during a robbery while others say he was training Contra rebels.

In this first book we meet Casca Rufio Longinus who is the Roman soldier that stabbed Christ during the crucifixion. From the cross, Christ curses Casca to remain a soldier until the Second Coming with these words, "Soldier, you are content with what you are. Then that you shall reman until we meet again." The book begins with Casca recovering in a US military hospital in Vietnam. The doctors who treat him marvel at the number of wounds he has suffered and even remove an ancient arrow head from Casca's leg.

The modern period is a tease as the majority of the action takes place in Judea. It provides the backstory and is very well done. We meet Pontius Pilate, Herrod, Christ and learn that Casca earns extra money as a Legionnaire by working at local wine shops as a bouncer. Casca ends up in hot water following the crucifixion and what happens next sets up the second book in the series. I look forward to following the adventures of a mercenary who has plied his trade for centuries.

Great problem book for finals prep

The Examples and Explanations series is, in my opinion, a little less helpful than the Siegel's series as the problems in this book are all pretty short and not quite like the long issue-spotters one ordinarily gets on final exams in law school. The upside of these books, however, is that they have summaries of the concepts you should know as well as problems with explanations for every topic. This means that if you don't quite understand one of the concepts you've been taught (tracing via constructive trusts, for example), you can use this book to supplement your lecture notes. I found the book very helpful in studying for my Remedies exam.

It's worth noting that every law school class will cover different topics in different ways, so this book may not cover some of the topics in as much detail as your professor did. I've found that this is always the case with commercial supplements; you just have to understand that your class won't always be exactly like the book, and learn not to panic when you can't answer a question on a subject your prof barely touched on. At the same time, every Remedies class should cover the basics (contract damages, tort damages, injunctions/specific relief, and restitution), all of which were covered in this book.

I teach Remedies. I used to be a fan of Gilbert's law summaries. Now I'm a fan of Examples and Explanations.

Gilbert's has gotten too long, too complex, and does too little summarizing.

No study aid is a substitute for the classroom. However, E & E can help pave the way to better understanding.

Strong E&E supplement

I have used E&E for just about every class in my law school career. I love the series and have really appreciated the application of the law to different hypos. This book is written in a easy to understand fashion and for the most part breaks down some complicated subjects into common language. Concise, clear, informative. Concepts are in alphabetical order: anima, ego, syzygy, etc. Highly recommended for students of Jung. At the moment I'm not teaching any introductions to Jung's thought, but when I do I plan to assign this book. I hope the authors consider expanding on the "critical" aspect some day: each definition is mostly explanatory with a few comments appended.

I read this book like a journey starting at 'A' and reading subsequent cross-references. It's clear & simple. Having read the Icon picture book on "Jung - For Beginners" (Hyde & McGuinness), this volume added the icing on the cake at introductory level. Enjoy.

He examines the reasons for the remarkable effectiveness of militant tactics in making women’s enfranchisement a political issue of central importance, and shows why militancy failed to secure this right prior to the outbreak of war in August 1914. He assesses, too, the influence of the vast social and political changes wrought by the war on the ultimate success of the campaign in 1918.

About the Author
Howard Spodek received his B.A. degree from Columbia University (1963), majoring in history and specializing in Columbia’s newly designed program in Asian Studies. He received his M.A. (1966) and Ph.D. (1972) from the University of Chicago, majoring in history and specializing in India. His first trip to India was on a Fulbright Fellowship, 1964–66, and he has spent a total of some seven years studying and teaching in India. He has also traveled widely throughout the United States, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. He has been a faculty member at Temple University since 1972, appointed Full Professor in 1984. He was awarded Temple’s Great
Teacher award in 1993.

Spodek’s work in world history began in 1988 when he became Academic Director of a comprehensive, innovative program working with teachers in the School District of Philadelphia to improve their knowledge base in world history and facilitate a rewriting of the world history program in the schools. Immediately following this program, he became principal investigator of a program that brought college professors and high school teachers together to reconsider, revise, and, in many cases, initiate the teaching of world history in several of the colleges and universities in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Those projects led directly to the writing of the first edition of the current text (1997).

Howard Spodek has published extensively on urbanization in India, including Urban-Rural Integration in Regional Development (1976); Urban Form and Meaning in South-East Asia (editor, with Doris Srinivasan, 1993); and a wide array of articles, including analyses of working women’s organizations. In addition he wrote and produced the documentary film, Ahmedabad (1983). He has written on his experiences with world history faculty at the college and high school levels in articles in The History Teacher (1992, 1995). He has received funding for his research, writing, teaching, and film from Fulbright, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the American Institute of Indian Studies, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Pretty good, but overpriced

Used this book for a high school freshman World History course. Overall it was good, it contained accurate information and sometimes the material was pretty interesting. Sometimes the page layout could be confusing however, with extra necessary text boxes or picture captions. The overall organization of the book didn't make complete sense in relation to the course of actual world history.
As far as textbooks go, however, this one was pretty interesting!
One last note--why does this book cost so much?? It has a thin cover, isn't very thick, not an excessive amount of pages...I don't understand!

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in other cultures, religious beliefs, and witchcraft.

Good, but not exceptional

I needed this book for an anthropology class. While it is mostly good, I have a few complaints. The first chapter is written with so much academical jargon, I spent half my time figuring out what the words meant and had difficulty grasping the meaning. Thankfully, the following chapters are written in an easier to follow tone. My other complaint has to do with some of the articles being very dated; religions grow and change, I expected the most recent edition to reflect that. Overall, if you need this book for your class, order it. How much you enjoy it really depends on how your professor uses the material.

Another low-value-added offering from Packt

I reviewed eight Tableau titles when I started out with Tableau a year ago; since then, there was a second edition of Milligan's "Learning Tableau", now there is "Tableau 10 Business Intelligence Cookbook" by Santos, and "Mastering Tableau" by Baldwin is just around the corner. All three recent books are from Packt. It looks like in a short while, the Tableau segment is going to be dominated by Packt just as the Qlik segment is now.

And you know what - I will continue to recommend good non-Packt books over Packt "book products". In this case, why would you pay $50 for a visually unappealing book that simply walks you through Tableau features, when you can get more by viewing free training videos on the Tableau site? (On tableau.com, select Learning > Free Training Videos). 90%+ of "Tableau 10 Business Intelligence Cookbook" is this straightforward and low-value-added; there are 10 pages or so of more intermediate things - primarily, examples of Tableau expressions - but buying a book for them would be a luxury. The "Cookbook" is too basic to be an intermediate Tableau book, yet as a beginner's book, it is manifestly not fit for purpose. It seems that the titular "cookbook" reference simply provides the author with an excuse to run through examples ("recipes") without bothering about explaining Tableau concepts. Sorry, that's not teaching.

My advice to a Tableau beginner would be: check out "Communicating Data with Tableau", "Tableau for Dummies" and "Tableau for Healthcare". (Do ignore the "healthcare" bit). All three are good, all three have different styles. Pick one or two which suit you. Milligan's book is worth a look, as follow-up, if you can get it cheaply.
