I love this beautiful little book. It is smaller than average, so it can be taken anywhere. The illustrations are beautiful and intricate. There is a quote that comes with every illustration. It gives you something to think about or gives you something to meditate on while coloring. Would Def recommend.

More helpful than Otto's Textbook

I find this companion textbook more helpful than the true textbook. The companion is in outline format with bullet points. At the end of each chapter there are review questions with detailed explanations. Great and to the point!

Good but not a stand alone product

I bought this while at this years ASE board review course. I actually used it to study at night and on the plane flight back. Got half way through in the past 4 days. The chapters are good for review with some bullet points and questions. This is clearly not written to stand alone but as a companion to Dr. Otto's Textbook. It did make a good study aid to get some concepts solid while the course was fresh in my mind. Allan Klein's book has way more questions with excellent explanations for the answers and an online version with good images. Otto's book works well as an add on to other study aids.

A truly necessary bridge

This is an excellent book, a necessary bridge for technical professionals who are willing to improve their public speaking skills. It is based on effective storytelling techniques and contains lots of exercises. One of the greatest strengths of this book is the comprehensive list of references about the main issues involving public speaking. I particularly like the discussion on how to achieve the state of flow in chapter 16. This book is also easy to follow and understand. It provides a solid platform to continually improve your skills. Great book!

Putting the Engine in the Engineer - The Power to Share Ideas

If you doubt the premise of this book, look no further than Lee Iacocca to see what learning to be an effective speaker can do for a mild mannered engineer! The author, Rashid Kapadia, has done a rare thing in writing “Necessary Bridges.” Where most books on public speaking are general in nature or directed to “obvious” professions like sales, this book, lovingly evangelizes the skills and tools for effective story telling and speaking to his own professions, engineering and project management. He shares his own journey, discovering these skills and learning lessons (sometimes the hard way) and clearly hopes to inspire his professional colleagues to give their careers the great boost he experienced by embracing skills that may not come naturally or that may have been eschewed as unnecessary.

In a very refreshing touch, the author writes in a very conversational style, sharing anecdotes, pointing out the path to success and effectively taking the persona of a seasoned mentor. He both shares his wisdom and lessons learned but has also constructed a series of exercises and challenges the reader to go beyond reading and actively participate in the learning process.

If you are an engineer, technical person and/or a project manager this book is a real gift. Rashid Kapadia has taken years of personal experience and applied his analytical engineer’s mind and crafted the material to present both a compelling cost/benefit analysis of the project he is encouraging you to take on and then has structured this project to guide you to the end result in the most effective and efficient manner. Most importantly, he demonstrates, in prose, the kind of conversational style and story telling power that he wishes to impart to the reader. This is no dry technical manual but a very personal document.

Having discovered public speaking and story telling much as the author did, and seeing the great payoff it’s had in my own career, I believe this book is an invaluable guide for any technical person who wants to learn how to communicate their expertise, knowledge and wisdom in a powerful way that connects with colleagues and clients from all backgrounds and professions. Steve Wozniak built the original Apple Computer. Steve Jobs sold it to the world. Why not be both? If you follow the path laid out by Mr. Kapadia, you will be well on your way!

200 hours well spent

You probably stumbled across this book and are reading the reviews because you are someone like me, a PE getting his feet wet in management. You feel that you are incredibly good at what you do, and feel that you are surrounded by incompetence. Why can't they just see everything as it is? What is wrong with all of them? You're looking for a book to overcome this disconnect. You are likely wise enough to know that any one book won't get you more than about 1% of the way to becoming a truly effective team member or leader.
In my opinion, Necessary Bridges strives to give you a roadmap for 25% of the journey. You are aware of the engineer stereotype, incredibly accurate, but incredibly hard to work with due to the profession's requirement to not make mistakes. Those of us successful in our careers are those with a hard head, we don't allow many mistakes to get by and don't let others sway our beliefs without substantiating evidence. We also have a hard time convincing those in other professions that we're right; not understanding why they don't understand our facts and numbers. Our hard heads get in the way!!
I couldn't help but imagine the first half of the book using every tool imaginable trying to gain access into our brains. Little hammers, big hammers, jackhammers, all trying to get through our thick skulls. That there is more to our careers than facts and numbers and budgets and schedules. Rashid does an excellent job here with many examples of how opening your mind to the scary world of artful communication is what we all need but can't see. The first half has many exercises and references to speeches that we could all benefit from experiencing.
The second half of the book contains excellent instructions on how to prepare and practice speeches. For this half of the book to be effective, you must practice. No one can become good at football or math or running a project just by reading a book. You've got to get off your duff and practice.
If you choose to purchase and read this book, block out 6hrs a week for 8 weeks to dedicate to improving your speaking skills. Follow the exercises and examples and you won't be able to help yourself become a better person and more effective employee/leader. Likely you'll end up joining a speaking group and attending for much longer. I wish you the best with whatever books you choose to enhance your life skills. Good luck!!

`The Critical Period' by John Fiske covers the early years of the post-Revolutionary United States of America. While the United States had secured a hard-fought independence and concluded the hostilities of the Revolutionary War, the next five years featured a series of setbacks until the states met to draw up a serviceable constitution. This book covers the story, including detailed coverage of both bookend events: The Treaty of Paris and the Ratification of the American Constitution.

This book was mentioned as a resource in Chapter Seven of History of the United States by Charles A. Beard and Mary Ritter Beard. Fiske's coverage of the five years between the book-end events make this book stand out. Edmund Randolph listed the problems of the era in his opening speech to the Constitutional Congress, `The federal government has no constitutional power to check a quarrel between separate states; nor to suppress a rebellion in any one of them; nor to establish a productive impost; nor to counteract the commercial regulations of other nations; nor to defend itself against the encroachments of the states.' Fiske describes the incidents behind those problems in detail, making the reader understand the link between the events of the critical period and various words of the Constitution.

You may have heard of some of these incidents, such as Shays Rebellion, the Newburgh Conspiracy, the Jay-Gardoqui Treaty with Spain, and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787- which was not an incident but one of the highlights of the era. If you don't quite remember these incidents, Fiske reminds you about them, with good explanations of the issues. He also describes other incidents of the era that are lesser-known: the Know-Ye Measures of Rogue's Island, the Rutgers versus Waddington trial over the Trespass Law in New York, and a pair of military conspiracies that scared the collective wits of the country, especially when they occurred around the same time as the better-known Newburgh Conspiracy and the Order of Cincinnati drama of 1783.

Did you know that Patrick Henry - `Give me liberty or give me death! - advocated the formation of a Southern Confederacy with Virginia joining the Carolinas, Georgia, and the western lands of Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Yazoo lands west of Georgia? The western territories were upset that the Jay-Gardoqui Treaty of 1786 allowed the Mississippi River to be closed to American traffic for twenty years. Because New Englanders supported this treaty, Henry stated that the north was an unreliable custodian of liberty in the frontier. In the end, the treaty was not approved. Henry also opposed the Constitution inked at Philadelphia for other reasons.

Fiske also makes a unique argument that many of the American delegates at Philadelphia were trying to shoehorn a misunderstood version of the British government into republican principles. This interesting argument states that the Glorious Revolution of 1688 made the Parliament the national body with power in England, but practically, these changes were not realized for 136 years. Such an argument is not made much today, maybe because it is a bit confusing to Americans unfamiliar with the history of the British government.

This book is free on Kindle, so the price is right. I downloaded an e-book for free on Project Gutenberg, so my review is based on that version of the book. The book was written in 1888 but the prose was not too stilted and the story was not too outdated. Some of Fiske's remarks about Indians may be considered socially incorrect today, but they are a small part of the book. His opinion was not an uncommon viewpoint from the times.

This book gave a wonderful account of the Critical Period. I used the book in conjunction with A Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution by Carol Berkin, a modern look at the American Constitution. I'd recommend this book by Fiske to anyone looking to understand the events that sparked the Constitutional Convention.

Following the traditional structure, Fiske emphasizes military and governmental events. However, he does it in more detail than usual; his examples are often interesting and little-known, and his language is lively. One of the best.

This is an excellent book and great follow up to Fiske's "The American Revolution". I loved reading those two volumes as well as this one...Fiske was an excellent historian and author and the proof is evident in these pages.

Philosophical Treatment of a Critically Important Practice

Holmgren seeks to justify and evolve a practice of forgiveness for wrongdoing. She emphasizes both forgiveness of self and others. Of course, she includes conditions or prerequisites for such forgiveness. This work is well documented and quite scholarly. Her development (moving from the individual to the institutional perspective) has a distinctly Rawlsian flavor and is underlain by a virtue-ethics stance. Although the book is well thought out, it is an initial foray; so one should read it as such.

A naive yet intelligent reader will find the book accessible, but it does tend to wend its way through her argument for forgiveness. Occasionally I lost the thread of the argument because the author wasn't able to keep me focused. More seriously, although I absolutely agree with her core thesis, I feel her argument is rather narrow and will leave those who believe in the singular efficacy of punishment without motivation to reexamine their stance. I also thought that the most powerful context in which her paradigm of forgiveness fits (restorative justice), was treated almost as an afterthought.

My perspective is based on eight years of experience as volunteer at a nearby prison where I have facilitated monthly Alternatives to Violence Project workshops and teach weekly Impact of Crime on Victims classes. I have come to feel that forgiveness (of self and others) is a critical component in rehabilitation. It seems that an offender cannot truly address what s/he has done and the drivers behind that action until they introspect and work from the very best part of themselves. This seems the only way to break through the dehumanization of their victims, reach full accountability, and threafter achieve a full rehabilitation of self. My goal has become to "reach" those offenders who have not yet begun serious introspection. However, this "breakthrough" is a very vulnerable point and easily results in a retrenchment which is even more difficult to break out of, so experience and more research is certainly called for. My general position is that, although we have all been damaged in some way, these individuals have generally been damaged so severely that their moral selves are distorted and too weak to resist the internal and external drivers of their behavior. We seem to feel no compunction at developing children to become moral beings; I feel that offenders, by committing antisocial acts, demonstrate that they are likewise in need of our assistance in becoming moral beings. I feel that self forgiveness -- quite along the line delineated by Holmgren -- is a central factor in regaining the strength of character needed for these individuals to rejoin society in a healthy way.

Holmgren, however, seems to feel that such intervention violates offenders by objectifying them. She also pushes her argument along the lines of forgiveness versus punishment (resentment, just desert, etc). I think this is what makes her argument too narrow. I think it also leads her to be too accommodating with regard to punishment. It's not that I believe punishment is wrong; simply that her argument opens the door for extreme distortion (extended and more severe punishment just because the crime rate increases; seems to me closer to abuse than discipline). I also believe that this aspect of her argument minimizes the responsibility of society to discipline deviant individuals but instead focuses too heavily on a regrettable need for punishment (although done with "respect, compassion, and real goodwill"!). I therefore believe that her argument would better be pursued in the context of the full range of discipline (setting the example, reward, redirection, enrichment, punishment not abuse).

Holmgren appears to have a rather simplistic model of "second order harm" stemming from commission of a crime. The ripple effect of a single act extends far beyond the anemic description she presents. The ripple effect is normally so extensive that an offender cannot possibly make restitution; at best they can only reform and attempt to "balance" their past with the ripple effect of socially admirable deeds. This perspective would, I think, motivate the responsibility of society to "sacrifice" in order to develop individuals rather than pursue the cheaper solution of simply locking them out of sight and out of mind until some arbitrary release date, at which time they are theoretically cured by years of emotional suffering and physical deprivation. Holmgren seems forced to disagree with application of discipline but condone punishment by the way she has chosen to defend her thesis. So I sense significant tension between her true "emotional" position and her "logical" position with respect to punishment. This is why I consider this work, although magnificent as far as it goes, to be an initial foray.

Good Book

This book is an excellent source of music for the movie, Spirit. My daughter loves the pictures and loves to hear her favorite songs being played on the piano. It is hard to get the book away from her to practice. I do wish there were more pictures. There are just a few. This would not be a good buy if the person is just getting the book for their child to look at the pictures.

These are my FAVORITE songs (from my favorite movie) and I play piano

Firstly, this sheet music is hard to find. All sheet music is, unless you are at a sheet music store, and even then, I hadn't seen it anywhere but the internet when I ordered it.

This paper-back book has all the songs from the Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron soundtrack (as you can tell from the details), as well as a couple of Hans Zimmer's instrumentals.

After ordering this, my only worry was that the piano/vocal/guitar style of music would be a hindrance to playing and/or a compromise to the quality of the sound. This was not the case. The notes sound exact and are not compromised or simplified in any way. This is as exact as transcription gets.

The music is written on three clefs: a vocal line and two piano lines, one for the melody and the other for the harmony. There are also chords written above the staves for those who prefer a less exact, perhaps easier-to-play sound.

The fight against globalization and the war in Iraq has led to a revival of grassroots activism. But there are many other causes for which communities organize: lack of sewage in poor neighborhoods, the need to support public schools, and affordable housing, to name just a few. Chambers is executive director of the Industrial Areas Foundation; founded by the noted organizer Saul Alinsky, the foundation is dedicated to supporting community organizing. A "radical" for Chambers is "a person who searches for meaning and affirms community." Thus, this is not an easy-to-consult handbook, but a book encouraging reflection about public life and ideals; the gap between the world "as it is" and "as it should be"; self-interest vs. self-sacrifice and other polarities; and how to create actions that not only receive momentary press attention but that are effective. Readers looking for quick tactical tips won't find them here, but readers looking for a solid foundation on which to base political action will find much to think about within these pages.

Roots for Radicals review

Roots for Radicals: Organizing for Power, Action, and Justice by Edward Chambers, with forward by Studs Terkel, provides a comprehensive approach of how to create social change in our complex and ever changing world. Edward Chambers was trained under the founder of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) Saul Alinsky. Chambers is credited for modernizing Alinsky's IAF model and his perspective is beautifully illustrated in the book Roots for Radicals. I feel that this is a must read for anyone his is interested in community organizing for social change. While some aspects of the book are dense, it is well worth the time to contemplate the challenging questions that Chambers poses - you will be happy you did!

Best Parts Are the Personal Stories

What I loved best about this book are the stories that Chambers told about his experiences, and the experiences of others using the Saul Alinsky organizing techniques. The theory part wasn't as interesting, although necessary to understanding the point of the organizing techniques.

Chambers updates Alinksy's earlier Rules for Radicals. It offers practical approaches to social organizing. The Industrial Areas Foundation teaches in politics there is organized money and organized people. To counter organized money, people must organize. And, as Roots for Radicals points out, organized people can strongly impact politics - but it is a lot of work!
